Kenneth Clarke Biography and Career:

Known professionally as Kenneth Clarke, he is a Conservative Party politician from the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom, he is referred to as the “Big Beast” of politics. He is the longest-serving ‘Member of Parliament (MP), often known as the ‘Father of the House,’ since he has been involved in politics since 1970, making him the most senior member of the House.

The British government has given him a variety of titles, including “Home Secretary,” “Education Secretary,” “Chancellor of the Exchequer,” “Health Secretary,” and even “Minister without Portfolio.” He has served in a number of different capacities. According to the press, he is sometimes referred to as “the Prime Minister who never was.” He earned a law degree from ‘Cambridge University,’ where he came into touch with a number of prominent political figures in the years to come.

Following that, he joined the realm of politics, where he quickly rose through the ranks, serving under a number of Prime Ministers, including Margaret Thatcher, John Major, and David Cameron. He achieved most of his accomplishments while serving in Major’s administration. Because of his pro-European leanings, he has been unsuccessful in his attempts to become the leader of the Conservative Party on multiple occasions. His attempts to prevent a no-deal Brexit resulted in his expulsion from the party, and he subsequently took a step back from frontline politics. However, in the post-Brexit scenario, his return to mainstream politics seems to be a distinct possibility.

Kenneth Clarke was born on July 2, 1940, in the English town of West Bridgford, in the county of Nottinghamshire. A mine electrician by trade, his father went on to work as a jeweler and watchmaker after the death of his mother, who was also called Kenneth Clarke.

Kenneth Clarke attended Nottingham High School as a result of a scholarship he was awarded. He studied law at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, where he graduated with honors in law in 1989. The place was also the place where he became acquainted with future politicians who would go on to become known as the ‘Cambridge Mafia.”

In 1963, Kenneth Clarke was summoned to the bar at the iconic ‘Gray’s Inn’ in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. In 1964, he ran for election to the House of Commons as a candidate from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. In 1966, he ran for the seat of Mansfield once again. He was defeated both times. After years of trying, he was ultimately elected to the House of Commons in 1970, representing the East Midlands district. Soon after, he gained notoriety as a liberal ‘Conservative Party’ member who was pro-European.

From 1972 until 1974, he was the whip in Prime Minister Edward Heath’s administration. For the years 1976 to 1979, he served as Industry Spokesman at the Ministry of Transport under Margaret Thatcher’s administration, a government whose election he had strongly opposed.

In 1980, he was appointed as a ‘Queen’s Counsel’. From 1979 to 1981, he worked in a variety of capacities in the Ministry of Transportation. He served as Minister of State for Health in the United Kingdom from 1982 until 1985. His role in the ‘contaminated blood controversy’ came to light during this time period, and he was roundly chastised for it.

Kenneth Clarke served in a variety of additional ministerial capacities from 1985 and 1987. In 1988, he was appointed to the position of ‘Health Secretary.’ The ambulance workers’ wage settlement strike in 1989 was managed effectively, earning him accolades from his political party.

In 1990, he was appointed as the Secretary of Education. Soon after, he was named as one of the lawmakers that urged Thatcher to leave her position. Following John Major’s election as Prime Minister in 1992, he retained his position as Education Secretary until 1993.

On January 1, 1993, Kenneth Clarke was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, and he presented his first budget the following year, which was well-received by his political party but unpopular with the broader public. However, during his term, the British economy, which had been in a state of recession, began to recover.

When the Conservative Party was defeated in the 1997 elections, Major resigned from his position as head of the party and ran for the position of party leader, but his Europhile views cost him the position. In 1998, he started sitting on the board of directors of British American Tobacco as a non-executive Deputy Chair, a post he maintained for over ten years, during which time he came under fire for his connections to the tobacco industry and the company’s involvement in smuggling.

Kenneth Clarke attempted to become the leader of the Conservative Party once again in 2001 but was unsuccessful. In the 2005 party leadership elections, he was once again considered a strong underdog against a different contender. Following that, he took a step back from the forefront of politics. David Cameron, the party’s leader at the time, nominated him to the position of Shadow Business Secretary in 2009.

When David Cameron became prime minister in 2010, he kept his seat as an “elder statesman” of the Conservative Party and was appointed to the positions of “Secretary of State for Justice” and “Lord Chancellor.” In a cabinet reshuffle in 2012, he was named as a ‘Minister without Portfolio,’ which means he has no specific responsibilities. However, he eventually rose to the position of ‘Trade Envoy for the British government.
