Kevin McCarthy Biography and Career:

Kevin Owen McCarthy (born January 26, 1965) is a businessman and politician from the United States of America. Since 2019, he has served as the House Minority Leader in the United States House of Representatives. He is a Republican who served as House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019. He served as the United States Representative for California’s 22nd Congressional District from 2007 to 2012 and has since been re-elected to the 23rd District following redistricting.

He was formerly chairman of the California Young Republicans and the Young Republican National Federation. McCarthy served in the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2006, serving as Minority Leader for the final two years. In 2006, he was a successful candidate for Congress. McCarthy was elected to the House leadership in 2009, during his second term as Republican Chief Deputy Whip. He served as House Majority Whip from 2011 to August 2014, when he was elected House Majority Leader to succeed departing House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who was defeated in his primary race.

McCarthy was elected House Minority Leader in January 2019 after the Republicans lost their majority in the 2018 midterm elections and Speaker Paul Ryan retired. He is the first California Republican to occupy the position. While he was House Majority Leader, he was the Speaker’s deputy; as Minority Leader, he is the House Republican leader.McCarthy has been a stalwart backer of President Donald Trump throughout his tenure as House Majority Leader and Minority Leader.

McCarthy was born in Bakersfield, California, on January 26, 1965, the son of housewife Roberta Darlene (née Palladino; November 16, 1940–) and Owen McCarthy (June 12, 1941 – January 28, 2000), an assistant city fire chief. McCarthy is a fourth-generation Kern County resident. His mother grandpa was an Italian immigrant, and his paternal grandfather was Irish. McCarthy is the first Republican member of his direct family, as both of his parents were Democrats. He earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from California State University, Bakersfield in 1989 and a Master of Business Administration from the university in 1994.

His uncle permitted him to operate a tiny deli stand inside the family’s yoghurt store when he was an adolescent. McCarthy has referred to himself as a small business owner based on this experience. Following Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election, Trump refused to concede and levelled allegations of fraud. McCarthy defended Trump’s position by asserting that Trump won and assisting in efforts to reverse the outcome.
