Kobe Bryant Biography and Career:

Kobe Bryant, whose full name was Kobe Bean Bryant, was an American professional basketball player. He was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, and passed away on January 26, 2020, in Calabasas, California. Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), which won five championships during his time with the team (2000–02 and 2009–10). Joe “Jelly Bean” Bryant, Bryant’s father, was a professional basketball player who played for the National Basketball Association (NBA) for eight seasons and then played professionally in Italy for another eight seasons. Bryant attended high school in Italy.

Bryant played basketball at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, when his family relocated back to the United States. There, he won multiple national Player of the Year accolades and broke the southeastern Pennsylvania scoring record held by Wilt Chamberlain with 2,883 points. After completing his high school education, Bryant decided to forego further education and instead enter the National Basketball Association draught.

In the 1996 NBA draught, the Charlotte Hornets selected him with the thirteenth overall choice. Soon after that, he was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers, and at the beginning of the 1996–1997 NBA season, he became the second-youngest player in the league’s history. After just two seasons with the Lakers, he was recognized as one of the league’s best players and named to the NBA All-Star Game, making him the youngest player ever to earn that honor.

Shaquille O’Neal, also a member of the Lakers, was a very well-known and skilled player, and Kobe Bryant had no choice but to share the spotlight with him. The two had a tense relationship with one another, but Phil Jackson, who took over as coach of the Lakers in 1999, was able to guide them to victory on the basketball court. As a result of Bryant, a shooting guard, and O’Neal, a center, meshing into a stunningly efficient combination, the Lakers had won three straight NBA championships by the time Bryant was 23 years old. O’Neal played the position of center.

Following the Lakers’ third championship in 2002, Kobe Bryant and the team struggled to maintain their success. The Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs in the second round in 2003. After a few months had passed, a young lady in Colorado leveled allegations of rape against Bryant. After a monthlong campaign of harassment by Bryant supporters and certain media members, the lady ultimately decided not to testify, which led to the dismissal of all charges against Bryant. He continued to proclaim his innocence throughout the ordeal.

(Bryant eventually apologized and admitted that he was aware that his accuser did not feel their sexual contact was consensual, and in 2005, a civil action was resolved as a result of the situation.) The incident significantly damaged his reputation. In 2004, the Los Angeles Lakers advanced to the NBA Finals thanks to Kobe Bryant’s leadership, but the Detroit Pistons ultimately defeated them. After that, O’Neal was moved to another club, and Kobe Bryant became the sole head of the squad.

During the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons, Bryant scored first in the league. In 2008, he was recognized as the most valuable player in the company for the first time in his career. In 2009, Kobe Bryant won his fourth NBA championship and was voted Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals after averaging a remarkable 32.4 points per game over the series. In the 2009–10 season, he led the Los Angeles Lakers to their third consecutive Western Conference title. He was voted MVP of the NBA finals for the second time after the Lakers won the series against the Boston Celtics in seven games.

The Lakers were victorious in their respective divisions in each of the following seasons, but they could not go beyond the second round of the playoffs. The Lakers had added superstars Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to their lineup heading into the 2012–13 season and were considered one of the preseason title favorites. However, the Lakers’ disappointing team was barely on pace to qualify for the final Western Conference playoff spot when Kobe Bryant ruptured his Achilles tendon in April 2013, causing him to miss the rest of the season. Bryant’s injury forced the Lakers to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

(At the end of that season, the Lakers earned the eighth and final spot in the playoffs, but they were eliminated in their first series.) In December 2013, he returned to the court, but he could only participate in six games before breaking his kneecap again and sitting out the rest of the season. Bryant made his comeback for the start of the 2014–15 season, but he suffered another injury soon after, damaging his rotator cuff in January of 2015. After playing almost the whole of the following season, he once again struggled, finishing with a career-low shooting % of 358 while averaging 17.6 points per game. As a result, he decided to retire after the last regular-season game of the 2015–16 season.

In addition to his success in the professional world, he was a part of the United States men’s basketball teams that won the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012. The poem “Dear Basketball” was written by Bryant in 2015, and then in 2017, it was adapted into a short film of the same name, which Bryant also narrated. The Academy recognized this piece as the year’s finest animated short film.

Bryant published the book The Mamba Mentality: How I Play in 2018, in which he described his approach to playing basketball. The title of the book reflected a nickname he bestowed upon himself during his playing days, “The Black Mamba.” Bryant retired from professional basketball in 2018 and is an ESPN analyst. On January 26, 2020, Bryant and his daughter, who was 13 years old at the time, were among a group of people riding in a helicopter on their way to a lady’s basketball tournament when the chopper crashed, taking the lives of all nine persons onboard. Later that year, he was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
