Krista Tippett Biography and Career:

Krista Tippett is a well-known American journalist, author, and entrepreneur. She was born Krista Weedman on November 9, 1960, in the United States. She is the presenter of the public radio show and podcast On Being, which she also founded. Tippett was presented with the National Humanities Medal by Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, in the year 2014.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 1983, Tippett applied for and was granted a Fulbright scholarship to continue his education at the University of Bonn in West Germany. She was employed at The New York Times bureau in Bonn throughout her time there.

In the article titled “They Just Say ‘Over There,'” which was published in Die Zeit, she discussed her time spent in Rostock. She began her career as a freelance foreign journalist in 1984 when she moved to divided Berlin to work as a stringer for The New York Times. She contributed articles and reports to publications such as The Times, Newsweek, the BBC, the International Herald Tribune, and Die Zeit. In 1986, Tippett was appointed to the position of special political adviser to John C. Kornblum, the senior United States ambassador stationed in West Berlin.

Krista Tippett picThe next year, she was given the position of principal adviser in Berlin to Richard Burt, who was the United States ambassador to West Germany. She has written that the moral questions that arose from the experience of seeing “high power, up close” eventually led to the spiritual, philosophical, and theological curiosities that have defined her work since then. She says that these questions arose as a result of seeing “high power, up close.”

In 1994, Tippett graduated from Yale University with a Master of Divinity degree. She came up with the concept for her radio program when she was working on a worldwide oral-history project for the Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Tippett approached Minnesota Public Radio in the late 1990s with the idea of hosting a program centered on religious topics. In 2001, the radio show was expanded into a monthly series, and in 2003, it was transformed into a weekly version that was broadcast nationally by American Public Media.

Tippett resigned from her position at American Public Media in 2013 to co-found the non-profit production firm known as Krista Tippett Public Productions. She has defined the organization as “a social venture with a radio program at its center.” Tippett is also the co-creator and leader of The Civil Conversations Project, which she has referred to as “an emerging method to repairing our shattered civic spaces.” Tippett is also the co-founder of The Conversation Project.

According to a description provided by the New York Times, “The Tippett style” “represents a fusion of all her parts – the child of small-town church comfortable in the pews. Tippett was presented with the 2013 National Humanities Medal at the White House in July 2014. The honor was given to him for “thoughtfully digging into the riddles of human life.” She was honored with the George Foster Peabody Award in 2008 for her work titled “The Ecstatic Faith of Rumi,” as well as three Webby Awards for excellence in electronic media. Her book, “Einstein’s God,” which was published in 2010, was a bestseller in The New York Times.

Shawnee, Oklahoma was Tippett’s home during his childhood. She received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1983 and used it to fund her studies in History at Brown University. During that time, she lived in Bonn, West Germany. She is a single mother to her two children and has been divorced.

I’m interested in starting from the very beginning of your narrative. It is said in your profile on the On Being website that you are the granddaughter of a Southern Baptist preacher, which leads me to believe that this fact has some kind of bearing on who you are now. In what ways did your youth in Oklahoma influence the person you would become? My grandpa, who was a minister in the Southern Baptist church, had a significant and powerful influence. As I’ve become older, I’ve come to the realization that his inconsistencies played just as important a role in my development as his consistency did.

His religion was predicated on a set of rigid principles and laws, and it focused mostly on the erroneous actions that were permitted. Even though he barely completed the second grade, I have no doubt that my grandpa had a brilliant intellect. Not only did the life of the mind and questions not have a home in the religious culture that he was a part of, but questions and the life of the mind were also considered suspicious and terrifying in some way, as was the body.

As I’ve progressed in my career and developed my own outlook on life as well as spiritual life, I’ve given this a lot of thought. For me, it’s not so much about the truth that we’re trying to figure out as it is about the questions that are driving us toward it. In terms of our culture, I believe that one of the most important challenges we are now facing is to piece ourselves back together and become more whole.

The traditional distinctions between the body, the intellect, and the spirit are being shown by science to be artificial inventions. As a result, there is a sense in which I was molded by my grandpa, and there is also a sense in which I am getting pleasure in an investigation that he would not have been able to see as being either conceivable or as exciting and therapeutic for me as it has been for me.

The latest On Being episode with author Elizabeth Gilbert that I listened to was wonderful, and I highly recommend listening to it. I thought it was very interesting how you discussed creativity being a part of everyone’s upbringing, but not in the sense that we often think of creativity.

It’s natural for us to want to find out more about something, but as we become older, we realize that maybe we shouldn’t do it or that it’s not right for us. In what ways did you have the chance to explore your creative side and your natural curiosity as a child? My interest was piqued, but it had nowhere to go since I didn’t know where to direct it.

The creative process was something that captivated my interest, but I realized that I fit squarely into the group that Liz and I had been talking about. My perception was that some types of individuals and activities have creative qualities and vice versa. I wasn’t an artist in the traditional sense, but I had a burning need to express my creative side.

A capacious perspective of what it means to live a creative life and what it means to be a creative person is one of the things I’ve lived into as I’ve gotten older. During our interview with Liz Gilbert, she framed those thoughts in a really unique and insightful manner.

“I wasn’t an artist in the traditional sense, but I had a burning need to express my creative side. A capacious knowledge of what it is to live a creative life and to be a creative person is one of the things I’ve lived into throughout the course of my life.
