Kristine Lilly Biography and Career:

In Wilton, an upper-middle-class neighbourhood northeast of New York City, Lilly grew up and went to school with her sister. From all accounts, she was an exceptional athlete, participating in not just soccer but also every other activity available, even the mostly masculine contact football games held in her area. No one held back on Lilly, according to her elder brother Scott, since she could catch a football on the move as well as any of them and was capable of giving as good as she received in return. While playing second base in Little League and joining a boys’ soccer team since there was no girls’ league available, Lilly refused to accept the sexual boundaries that existed in organised sport. Her father, Steven Lilly, notes out that when she was barred from participating in a regional soccer competition in Niagara Falls, New York, the whole squad chose to walk off the field rather than continue to play in the game without her.

Lilly was unaffected by the vitriol often hurled at her by rival players—as well as by their coaches and parents—and flourished in an environment that would have destroyed the spirit of others her age if they had been there. She recounted her early experiences as a sportsperson in the following way: “I was surrounded by a group of gentlemen. It made me more resilient. It made me realise that there was nothing I couldn’t do. Neither my parents nor anybody else ever told me that I couldn’t accomplish anything because I was a female. My brother used to take me with him on his adventures. I was a female, yet I was treated as if I were one of the boys.”

In the summer of 1987, Lilly, then a fifteen-year-old high school junior, flew to Chicago to test out for the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. She became the youngest player in the history of the national team, and at five feet and four inches, she was also the smallest. Lilly, who was sixteen at the time, started at left forward in a historic 2–0 win against the Chinese team in Tianjin, less than a month after her sixteenth birthday. She scored one goal in the match. When she returned to her hometown, she captained her high school team, which led Wilton to three state championships in four years.

While Lilly was attaining these stunning early triumphs, her family was disintegrating around her and her brother. It was just before she left home in 1989 to take an athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill when her parents separated. Instead of allowing personal difficulties to detract from her performance, she used her emotional anguish as a chance to sharpen her concentration on the game. In an interview with journalist Marla Miller, she said that “the only place I could express my sentiments was in the game.” “I had an internal conflict that manifested itself on the field.”

Under Coach Tony DeCicco, Lilly and another famous soccer player, Mia Hamm, led the University of North Carolina Tar Heels to four consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships. With her tenacious play, Lilly garnered virtually every honour available in women’s college soccer, including the Hermann Trophy (1991), the UNC Athlete of the Year award (1993), and recognition as All-America, All-South, and All-Atlantic Coast Conference each of her four years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She concluded her collegiate career with 78 goals and 41 assists, and her jersey number 15 was retired as a result of her accomplishments. Her bachelor’s degree in communication was completed on time in 1993, despite the extracurricular activities and travel she had to do to get there.

Lilly is most well-known to the general public as a member of the United States National Soccer team. With over 215 international appearances under her belt, she has been dubbed by Soccer Times as the “iron lady” of the sport. She has been a part of the squad every year since her teenage debut in 1987, and she has played in more international matches than any other player in the globe. When Soccer Times examined her career to date, they discovered that she had appeared in 88 percent of the matches in U.S. National team history, had started 186 of her 191 appearances, and, perhaps most impressive of all, had played a full 90 minutes in 157 games. In addition to winning the inaugural Women’s World Cup tournament in 1991, the team also won the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the gold medal at the Goodwill Games in 1998, and a second World Cup in 1999, among other notable achievements. However, despite being noted for her passing and defensive play, Lilly is the team’s third-highest point scorer all-time.

According to the magazine Women’s Sports and Fitness, Lilly is considered one of the “fore-mothers of women’s soccer” in the United States. In a country where soccer has traditionally taken a backseat to other major sports, and where women’s sports have traditionally taken a backseat to men’s sports, the achievement of these athletes in gaining national and international respect for their team is one of the most remarkable stories in American sports history. David Hirshey says that since they do not have their own professional league, “these women are forced to practise alone in weight rooms, racquetball courts, and empty stadiums… until they are called to international competitions.”

Throughout this process, Lilly’s contribution has been critical, and her colleagues on the foremothers’ list are keen to point this out. In an interview, Michelle Ayers said that “Lilly is my favourite player” because “she is the one who performs the grunt work.” Julie Foudy described her as “a tremendous stud who has never had a poor game,” which was a typically forthright statement from her. Whenever people tell her that she is the greatest player in the world, Mia Hamm responds by saying that Lilly is the best player in the world. Mia Hamm has been playing with Lilly since college, and her movie-star good looks have earned her a disproportionate amount of media attention. Lilly’s tough, consistent, and selfless performance, as well as her team leadership, have contributed to the United States’ emergence as a viable competitor in the international arena.
