In Wilton, an upper-middle-class neighbourhood northeast of New York City, Lilly grew up and went to school with her sister. From all accounts, she was an exceptional athlete, participating in not just soccer but also every other activity available, even the mostly masculine contact football games held in her area. She became the youngest player in the history of the national team, and at five feet and four inches, she was also the smallest. Lilly, who was sixteen at the time, started at left forward in a historic 2–0 win against the Chinese team in Tianjin, less than a month after her sixteenth birthday. She scored one goal in the match. When she returned to her hometown, she captained her high school team, which led Wilton to three state championships in four years.
While Lilly was attaining these stunning early triumphs, her family was disintegrating around her and her brother. It was just before she left home in 1989 to take an athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill when her parents separated. Instead of allowing personal difficulties to detract from her performance, she used her emotional anguish as a chance to sharpen her concentration on the game.
