Kwasi Kwarteng Biography and Career:
As Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy since 2021, Kwasi Alfred Addo Kwarteng (born May 26, 1975) is a British Conservative Party politician who was born in Ghana and grew up in the United Kingdom. Since 2010, he has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Spelthorne constituency.
Following the retirement of Suella Braverman from the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU), Kwarteng was named Undersecretary of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU). As a result of Boris Johnson’s election as Prime Minister in July 2019, Kwarteng was advanced to the position of Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth, and is required to attend Cabinet meetings as part of his duties.
Born in 1975 in the London Borough of Waltham Forest to parents Alfred K. Kwarteng and Charlotte Boaitey-Kwarteng, who had relocated from Ghana in the 1960s as students, Kwarteng has a brother and two sisters. His mother works as a lawyer, while his father works as an economist for the Commonwealth Secretariat of the United Nations.
After attending a public elementary school, Kwarteng went on to Colet Court, an independent preparatory school in London, where he graduated with honors in 1988 and was awarded the Harrow History Prize. Later, Kwarteng attended Eton College, where he excelled as a King’s Scholar and was named winner of the renowned Newcastle Scholarship Award. At Trinity College, Cambridge, he studied classics and history, earning first-class honors in all subjects and the Browne Medal on two separate occasions. He was a part of the University Challenge squad that won the competition in 1995. (in the first series after the program was revived by the BBC in 1994). With the help of a Kennedy Scholarship, he attended Harvard University and then went on to get a Ph.D. in economic history from the University of Cambridge in 2000.
In his previous life, Kwarteng worked as a journalist for The Daily Telegraph and as a financial analyst at JPMorgan Chase and other investment institutions before becoming a member of parliament. Ghosts of Empire, a book examining the legacy of the British Empire, was released by Bloomsbury in 2011 and was written by him. Gridlock Nation, which he co-authored with Jonathan Dupont in 2011, is a book exploring the causes and solutions to traffic congestion in the United Kingdom.
Kwarteng was the Conservative candidate in the Brent East seat for the 2005 general election, and he was hailed as “a rising star on the right of the party.” The incumbent Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather (who had won the constituency in a 2003 by-election) and the Labour Party’s Yasmin Qureshi finished first and second, respectively, in the by-election. In 2005 and 2006, Kwarteng served as chairman of the Bow Group. His potential to become the first black Conservative cabinet member was raised in 2006, according to The Times. The Conservative Party’s list of candidates for the London Assembly election in 2008 placed him sixth overall, however, he was not elected since the party won just three seats on the London-wide list, which was a low number for the party.
The incumbent Conservative MP for Spelthorne, David Wilshire, became embroiled in controversy as a result of the Parliamentary expenses scandal and announced that he would be stepping down as a result of the next general election, prompting Kwarteng to be chosen as the Conservative candidate for the seat in an open primary in January 2010.
Kwarteng was elected to the seat with a total of 22,261 votes (numerically more votes but a lower percentage of the vote than his predecessor). In October 2011, Kwarteng did not vote in favor of the backbench EU Referendum Bill, which was introduced by the Democratic Alliance. With his criticism of the Help to Buy housing policy as inflationary in 2013, Kwarteng caused consternation among the government’s chief economist, George Osborne.
In August 2012, Kwarteng collaborated with four other members of Parliament to write a book titled Britannia Unchained. The writers presented a variety of observations and recommendations, including the observation that “Once they reach the office, the British are among the worst idlers in the world.” They also suggested that The welfare state, according to the book, should be drastically reduced in order “to restore it to the contributing concept envisioned by its creator Sir William Beveridge – that is, you should get benefits in exchange for making payments.”
