The son of Betty and Larry Wilmore, Wilmore was born on October 30, 1961, in Los Angeles County, California, and grew up in the nearby neighborhood of Pomona. His ancestors hail from the city of Evanston in the state of Illinois. He was brought up as a Catholic. His younger brother Marc worked in the television industry as a writer, actor, and producer as well. Wilmore developed an early interest in subjects such as science, magic, science fiction, and fantasy as a child, which has influenced the development of his stage act.

The actor defined himself as a “nerd” in an interview with National Public Radio, noting that “the black comic figure used to have this swagger and constantly displayed strength…now there’s a comedy figure where it’s OK to simply be a nerd and be black,” according to the station. Wilmore received his high school diploma from Damien High School in La Verne, California, in 1979. He was a theatre major at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, but dropped out to pursue acting and stand-up comedy full-time instead.

Wilmore has been married to actress Leilani Jones for 20 years; the pair has two children, John and Lauren, who are both working in the entertainment industry. After a year of separation, they decided to divorce the next year. He lived with his family in San Marino, California, until he relocated to New York City to work on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which he hosted and for which he received an Emmy nomination. Having had a few cameo appearances in lesser films and television shows during the 1980s, Wilmore went on to star in the television show The Facts of Life, in which he played a police officer who made frequent appearances on the show.

His younger brother Marc worked as a writer for In Living Color as well, but he was also a cast member on the sitcom Sister, Sister, where he portrayed a bus driver in one episode. He also worked as a writer for the chat show Into the Night With Rick Dees, the sketch comedy show In Living Color, and the sitcom Sister, Sister, among other projects. A series of black sitcoms, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Jamie Foxx Show, led to him working as a writer and producer in the following years.

Wilmore co-created the animated comedy The PJs with Eddie Murphy in 1999, and he served as the show’s executive producer until the show’s termination in 2001. He went on to conceive and produce The Bernie Mac Show, for which he was nominated for an Emmy for writing the pilot episode. He collaborated with Whoopi Goldberg on the creation and production of Whoopi. Following President Barack Obama’s election as President, he began appearing on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show on a regular basis in 2006, where he was billed as “Senior Black Correspondent” or a derivative form of the title, such as “Senior Executive Commander-in-Chief Who Also Happens To Be Black Correspondent,” and was billed as “Senior Black Correspondent.” His appearance on the show was punctuated by a number of funny observations regarding the Black experience in current American society that was shared by the audience.

In January 2009, Hyperion published Wilmore’s political humor book, I’d Rather We Got Casinos: And Other Black Thoughts, which Booklist describes as “a faux collection of articles, essays, radio broadcast transcripts, and letters exploring the more ludicrous angles on race.” Booklist describes it as “a faux collection of articles, essays, radio transcripts, and letters exploring the more ludicrous angles on race.” When Wilmore appeared on the Daily Show in January 2007, he used the phrase “I’d Rather We Got Casinos” to introduce the segment. William Wilmore performed as the main attraction at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 30, 2016. Several people objected to his use of the slang term “nigga” to refer to President Obama in the phrase “Barry, you did it my nigga.”

According to Al Sharpton, he defended his conduct by saying, “I intended to make a point rather than just crack a joke… I was particularly excited about the prospect of explaining the historical ramifications of the Obama presidency from my perspective.” With the launch of Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air in May 2017, Wilmore became the first black person to broadcast a podcast for the Ringer Podcast Network, which is run by Bill Simmons.
