Lee Greenwood Biography and Career:

Lee Greenwood was born with a fine voice and a broad range, but he mistakenly transformed it into a distinctive voice by overworking it in a less-than-healthy environment. He was born and raised in Sacramento, and he put his musical talents to use on the casino circuit, where he worked in the green-felt jungles of Reno and Las Vegas, where he dealt cards by day and sang in dark bars by night. Greenwood’s persistent hoarseness was caused by the physical toll of working two jobs, the vocal strain of performing six nights a week, and the detrimental experience of singing in smoky nightclubs prior to the implementation of smoking bans in public places. He’s taken advantage of it, and he’s gone on to become one of country music’s best balladeers.

Mel Tillis’ road manager Larry McFadden tipped Greenwood up to his potential. Greenwood paid for his own plane ticket to Nashville in order to record a few recordings, but it took more than a year for his hard work to pay off. When it finally happened, Greenwood broke through with “It Turns Me Inside Out,” a song that was often compared to Kenny Rogers because of his exaggerated vibrato. Greenwood was able to get rid of the “Kenny clone” image in a short period of time, but he continued to mine romantic material for the majority of his songs. One or two exceptions have been made, such as “Touch and Go Crazy” and “Mornin’ Ride,” but the largest exception is his hallmark song, the self-written “God Bless the United States of America,” which was named Song of the Year by the Country Music Association.

Greenwood, who grew up on a farm outside of Sacramento, developed a love of music at a young age, taught himself to play the saxophone when he was nine years old. He used to be a member of a western dance band named My Moondreams while he was in his preadolescence. The family relocated to Anaheim, California, when he was 13 years old, but three years later he returned to Sacramento to live with his grandparents. He has two younger brothers and a sister. A number of country and Dixieland ensembles used him in the interim between the two transfers. Upon his return to Sacramento, Greenwood became a member of Chester Smith’s band, which helped him increase his popularity across California. Later, Del Reeves recruited Greenwood to play saxophone, and it was while working with the singer that Lee learned how to be a stage performer and actor. In 1962, he created his own band, a pop duo is known as Apollo, and the trio relocated to Las Vegas to pursue their careers.

Upon renaming themselves the Lee Greenwood Affair and relocating to Los Angeles, the group recorded a couple of singles for the Paramount label within five years of their formation. After the record company went out of business, Greenwood was approached by Felix Cavaliere and Dino Danelli about joining the newly formed Rascals, but he turned them down. As a result, he returned to his hometown of Las Vegas, where he worked as an arranger, backing singer, and lounge pianist, as well as providing organ accompaniment for strippers. By 1973, he had risen to the position of lead vocalist and bassist in the Bare Touch of Vegas show, while continuing to work as a blackjack dealer at the Tropicana Casino and Resort. Throughout the mid-’70s, he was employed at both positions.

By the end of the 1970s, he was performing in Reno nightclubs, when he met Larry McFadden, who was at the time the bandleader for Mel Tillis’ tour. In the beginning, Greenwood was apprehensive about going into the studio, but he finally made the trip to Nashville and recorded a series of demos. Soon after, McFadden took over as his manager and assisted the singer in signing a recording contract with MCA Records in June of 1981.

Four months later, his first song, “It Turns Me Inside Out,” reached the Top 20 of the country’s singles chart. Greenwood’s first popularity was aided greatly by the striking resemblance between his gruff voice — which had been toughened up by years of working in smoky casinos — and the voice of Kenny Rogers. In March of 1982, his second single, “Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands,” entered the Top Ten, kicking off a string of 19 Top Ten hits that lasted over six years and was practically unbroken.
