Liam Fox Biography and Career:
In 2011, he was appointed as Secretary of State for International Trade, a position he held from 2016 to 2019. Previously, he served as Secretary of State for Defence from 2010 to 2011. He was born on September 22, 1961, in London, England. Conservative Party member Fox has represented North Somerset (previously Woodspring) in Parliament since 1992. He has been a member of the House of Commons since 1992.
Fox received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow and worked as a general practitioner and civilian army medical practitioner before being elected to the House of Commons. After serving in a number of ministerial positions under John Major, Fox went on to serve as Constitutional Affairs Spokesman from 1998 to 1999, Shadow Health Secretary from 1999 to 2003, Chair of the Conservative Party from 2003 to 2005, Shadow Foreign Secretary in 2005, and Shadow Defence Secretary from 2005 to 2010. Fox is currently the Conservative Party’s deputy leader and chairman.
His name came up in the 2009 expenditures controversy when he was discovered to have made the highest over-claim on expenses. As a consequence, he had to pay the most money back to the taxpayers. Prime Minister David Cameron appointed him as Defence Secretary in 2010, a position from which he resigned on 14 October 2011 amid allegations that he had given a close friend, lobbyist Adam Werritty, inappropriate access to the Ministry of Defence and had allowed him to accompany the government on official trips abroad.
Fox was appointed as the first Secretary of State for International Trade by incoming Prime Minister Theresa May in July 2016, after the United Kingdom’s decision to exit the European Union. He was also elevated to the position of President of the Board of Trade. Fox has attempted to become the leader of the Conservative Party twice, in 2005 and 2016. Both times, he was unsuccessful. During a cabinet upheaval led by new Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he was demoted from his ministerial post in July 2019.
Fox was born and reared in East Kilbride, Scotland, in a Catholic family of Irish ancestry. He was raised in a council home, which his parents eventually purchased, and attended school there. His great-uncle, John Fox, served as Labour Provost of Motherwell, and the majority of his family members were staunch supporters of the party.
He attended St. Bride’s High School (now a part of St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School) alongside his brother and two sisters, who were all educated in the public school system. He received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1983, after which he became a partner in the firm. A former general practitioner (he worked as a family doctor in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, before being elected to the House of Commons), Fox has also served as a Civilian Army General Practitioner as well as a Divisional Surgeon with St John Ambulance. As a general practitioner, he is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
The Dialectic Society was formed when he was studying medicine at the University of Glasgow in the early 1980s, and he went on to become president of the Glasgow University Conservative Association while still in school. Fox ran for the Hairmyres ward of East Kilbride District Council in May 1984, finishing second (by 210 votes) behind incumbent Labour councilor Ed McKenna, who was then the council’s chairman.
In his time at Glasgow, Fox resigned from his position on the university’s Students Representative Council (SRC) in protest at the council’s passage of a resolution denouncing the decision of the university’s Glasgow University Union (GUU) to deny the incorporation of a homosexual students’ society. The SRC motion referred to the union’s decision as “bigoted,” as well as the justifications provided for it. The Glasgow University Union (GUU) maintained its position despite the issue, which was covered extensively in the national media. As a result, several other university student unions throughout the country, including those in Edinburgh, severed connections with their Glasgow counterparts.
Fox was cited as stating the following while explaining his decision to resign from the SRC and endorse the GUU’s position: “Actually when it comes to sexual things, I’m a very liberal person. I really don’t want the homosexuals to be able to flaunt their sexuality in front of me, which is exactly what they would do.” “Fortunately most of us have evolved from the days when we were students more than a quarter of a century ago,” Fox stated in response to a question about his remarks in 2008.
