Lidia Bastianich Biography and Career:

Lidia Bastianich was born in Pula, on the Istrian peninsula, on February 21, 1947 to Erminia and Vittorio Matticchio. The name of her brother is Franco. Formerly a part of Italy, the city became a part of Yugoslavia in 1947. Her family struggled under the communist tyranny of Yugoslavia. Due to their inability to speak Italian, they were forced to change their surname from Matticchio to Motika.

As refugees, the family fled to Trieste, Italy in 1956 and resided on Risiera di San Sabba. The next two years were spent by her mother as a cook-housekeeper and her father as a chauffeur. She, herself, helped in her school kitchen. Ultimately, in 1958, the family relocated to Queens, New York, with support from Catholic Relief Services, their sponsors. Lidia Bastianich began working part-time at the age of fourteen.

Even in a bakery owned by Christopher Walken’s father, she worked. She started working full-time at Manhattan pizza after graduating from high school. 1971 marked the opening of Lidia and Felix Bastianich’s first restaurant, Buonavia, in Queens. The restaurant served Italian-American food. A year later, she began her training as an assistant cook at the restaurant.

The success of Buonavia enabled the opening of Villa Secondo, a second Italian restaurant in Queens. The restaurant was so popular that it grabbed the attention of food critics.
