Liz Truss Biography and Career:
Elizabeth Mary Truss (born July 26, 1975) is a British politician who has served as Foreign Secretary since 2021 and Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019. She was born in London, England. She is a Conservative Party member who has served in a variety of cabinet posts under Prime Ministers David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson, among others.
Truss’ parents, John Kenneth Truss and Priscilla Mary Truss welcomed him into the world on July 26, 1975, in Oxford, England. During her childhood, her father was a professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds, while her mother worked as a nurse, teacher, and member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). Truss has characterized both as being “to the left of the Labour Party.” When Truss subsequently ran for election to the House of Commons, her mother consented to campaign for her, despite her father’s opposition to the notion.
As a child of four years old, she and her family relocated to Scotland. Truss went to West Primary Institution in Paisley, Renfrewshire, and then Roundhay School, a comprehensive school in northeast Leeds, where he finished his education. She spent a year in Canada, and she compares the “competition” attitude toward education there to the “trendy” education she had in Leeds. Merton College, Oxford, was where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Truss served as President of the Liberal Democrats at Oxford University and as a member of the national executive committee of the party’s youth and student branch. In a speech delivered at the Liberal Democrats convention in 1994, she announced her support for the Republican Party. Truss became a member of the Conservative Party in 1996. Truss went on to work for Shell as a commercial manager and Cable & Wireless as the company’s economics director after graduating in 1996. He also obtained certification as a management accountant.
She joined the full-time deputy director of Reform in January 2008 after losing her first two elections. There, she fought for higher academic standards in schools, a stronger emphasis on combating severe and organized crime, and immediate action to address Britain’s declining competitiveness. Among her many publications are The Importance of Mathematics and A New Level, both of which she co-authored.
She served as the chairperson of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association from 1998 to 2000, and she is a member of the Conservative Party. She was elected as a councilor in the London Borough of Greenwich in 2006, and she resigned from her position in 2010, only a few months before her term of office expired.
Truss ran in the 2001 election for the Labour-held seat of Hemsworth, winning with a 4 percent increase in the vote. Prior to the 2005 general election, Sue Catling, the Conservative Party’s parliamentary candidate for Calder Valley, was pushed to quit by the local Conservative Association, and Truss was chosen to run for the seat as a result.
Truss was elevated to the top of the Conservative Party’s ‘A List’ during David Cameron’s tenure as leader. Members of the constituency Conservative Association nominated her for the South West Norfolk seat in October 2009, and she was elected in November 2009. She received more than 50% of the vote in the first round of the finals when she competed against five other contenders.
Some members of Truss’ constituency association expressed dissatisfaction with her nomination shortly after it was announced, claiming that knowledge about her marital adultery, which was supposed to have occurred some years previously with Conservative MP Mark Field, had been concealed from them. A move to terminate Truss’s candidacy was put forth, but it was rejected by a vote of 132 to 37 in a general meeting of the association’s members three weeks after the proposal was made.
Truss campaigned for a number of issues following her election to the House of Commons on May 6, 2010, including the retention of the RAF Tornado based at RAF Marham in her constituency. Over the course of seven months, she asked 13 questions in the Commons about RAF Marham, secured a special debate on the subject, wrote dozens of letters to ministers, and collected signatures on a petition that was delivered to Downing Street. Furthermore, she was successful in her efforts to get the A11 west of Thetford dulled.
Having a particular interest in the Thetford Forest, which is located within her district, she spoke out against the idea to sell off woods and played a key role in blocking the construction of a waste incinerator in West Norfolk. Due to her efforts to advocate for design improvements to road intersections in her area, particularly the A47, she was recognized as Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month in January 2013 by the traffic-safety organization Brake.
In March 2011, she published a report for the liberal think-tank CentreForum in which she suggested that the school system should stop discriminating against major academic courses in order to enhance social mobility. For the same think group, Truss produced a second paper in May 2012, in which she pushed for reform in the structure of the United Kingdom’s childcare sector.
In October 2011, she established the Free Enterprise Group, which has garnered the backing of more than 40 fellow Conservative Members of Parliament. She and four other members of the Free Enterprise Group co-authored After the Coalition, a book that sought to challenge the widespread belief that Britain’s economic decline is inevitable by arguing for the reinstatement of a more entrepreneurial and meritocratic culture, which was published in September 2011.
