Los Angeles Kings Biography and Career:
The Los Angeles Kings are a professional ice hockey club headquartered in the city of Los Angeles in the United States of America. They are a part of the National Hockey League’s Pacific Division of the Western Conference, which includes the Los Angeles Kings (NHL).
The club was created on February 9, 1966, when Jack Kent Cooke was given an NHL expansion franchise for Los Angeles. The team was one of six teams that started to play as part of the 1967 NHL expansion, and it was the first team in the city to do so.
The Kings played their home games in The Forum in Inglewood, California for 32 seasons until relocating to the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles to begin the 1999–2000 season. The Forum was built in 1982 and is a multi-purpose facility.
During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Kings enjoyed a number of seasons highlighted by strong regular-season performance, only to be squandered in the postseason by early exits. A series of financial difficulties followed after their appearance in the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, culminating in bankruptcy in 1995 that was only resolved when the team was purchased by Philip Anschutz and Edward P Roski. In the following years, the Kings suffered from inconsistency, with their only glimmer of hope coming in the 2009–10 season, when they ended a six-year playoff drought with a lineup that included goaltender Jonathan Quick, defenseman Drew Doughty, and forwards Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar, as well as forward Justin Williams.
The Kings have won two Stanley Cups in three seasons under coach Darryl Sutter, who was appointed early in the 2011–12 season. The first was in 2012 when they defeated the New Jersey Devils, and the second was in 2014 when they defeated the New York Rangers. Quick and Williams were named the most valuable players in the playoffs, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy for each of them.
Several teams from the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL) played in California prior to the Kings’ relocation to the Los Angeles area. These teams included the PCHL’s Los Angeles Monarchs in the 1930s and the WHL’s Los Angeles Blades in the 1960s. The Kings were the first professional hockey team to relocate to Los Angeles.
When the NHL decided to expand for the 1967–68 season, amid rumors that the Western Hockey League (WHL) was planning to transform itself into a major league and compete for the Stanley Cup, five different Los Angeles groups competed for a hockey franchise, including groups led by Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson and Donna Reed’s producer husband Tony Owen.
The NHL ultimately chose the Los Angeles Kings, who were awarded the franchise in 1970. Blades owner Dan Reeves, who was also the owner of the National Football League’s Los Angeles Rams, seemed to be the frontrunner since he already owned a club and had a lease on the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, which was the most convenient location. However, he would eventually be outdone by Canadian billionaire Jack Kent Cooke, who owned the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association.
While the Lakers were playing in the Memorial Sports Arena, Cooke petitioned for a long-term NBA lease as well as the right to sign a lease for a hockey arena in the event that he was awarded an NHL team. However, the Los Angeles Coliseum Commission, which continues to operate the Sports Arena and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to this day, had already reached an arrangement with the Blades and could only give the Lakers a two-year contract.
The Los Angeles Kings acquired Mike Richards and prospect Rob Bordson from the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2011 off-season in exchange for Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn, and a 2012 second-round selection in the transaction. In addition, at Ryan Smyth’s request, the organization dealt him back to the Edmonton Oilers in return for Colin Fraser and a seventh-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Simon Gagne, formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning, was subsequently acquired by the club to play with Mike Richards, who was formerly of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Because they had won two Stanley Cup titles in the previous three seasons, the Los Angeles Kings were considered the early favorites to defend their crown heading into the 2014–15 season. The next game was an overtime loss at the Arizona Coyotes, which was followed by a victory over the Winnipeg Jets at home the following night.

This season, the Kings played in their second outdoor game, this time at Levi’s Stadium against the San Jose Sharks as part of the NHL Stadium Series, which concluded in December.
