Lowell Spinners Biography and Career:
The baseball team the Lowell Spinners were headquartered in Lowell, MA. New York–Penn League (NYPL) Class A Short Season affiliate of Boston Red Sox was a part of the team from 1996 to 2020. Lowell will not be able to play in affiliated baseball after the 2020 season because of MLB’s restructure of the minor leagues. After the Elmira Pioneers relocated to Lowell in 1996, the team was formed. Since 1998, the Spinners have played at Edward A. LeLacheur Park rather than Stoklosa Alumni Field. In 1877, Lowell hosted two organized baseball teams, and the city’s baseball history stretches back to that time.
Both the 1877 Lowell squad and the 1877 Lowell Ladies team were members of the League Alliance in 1877. Until 1947, Lowell had been a regular member of the Class B New England League but hadn’t had a minor league baseball team since Lawrence Millionaires moved there on July 15. The Batavia Muckdogs knocked them out of the playoffs. New York Spinners were once again a part of the playoffs but lost to the New York Yankees in 2009. The Red Sox signed a two-year extension to their player development agreement with the Spinners in October 2014. The contract was renewed for the 2018 season in November 2015. The Spinners finished the 2016 season with a franchise-best 47 wins and tied their home win record for the season (25). Tyler Hill and Bobby Dalbec became the first Spinners players to receive Player of the Month honors in the New York-Penn League. It was a 2–0 loss against the Hudson Valley Renegades in the playoffs for the Spinners.
After being called up from the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, pitching prospect Jason Groome made his major league debut in the playoffs. With a 2-1 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs, the Spinners advanced to the league playoffs, where they will face the Brooklyn Cyclones, after winning their division. It was a 2–1 loss for the Spinners in the finals, with Brooklyn winning the decisive game 4–3. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the Spinners were unable to play in 2020.
