Mandy Cohen Biography and Career:

Cohen spent his childhood on Long Island in the hamlet of Baldwin, which is located in the town of Hempstead, New York. She was encouraged to get into the medical field by her mother, who had a career as a nurse practitioner specializing in emergency medicine. Cohen attended Cornell University and received his undergraduate degree in policy analysis and management there.

She is a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine, where she earned her medical degree, as well as the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she earned her doctoral degree in public health. At the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, she completed her residency in internal medicine. She joined the American College of Physicians’ National Council of Student Members in 2004 while she was still a student at a medical school and served in that capacity ever since.

During the time that she was doing her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, she was a member of the hospital’s primary care, quality assurance, and recruitment committees. After that, she was a Co-Director for the Health Policy Elective at Massachusetts General Hospital and a northeast representative for the American College of Physicians’ National Council of Associates.

Both of these positions were held at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Cohen served as the chief operating officer and head of staff at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under the Obama administration before being appointed to the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services. In addition to that, she was the Deputy Director of Comprehensive Women’s Health Services at the Department of Veterans Affairs in the United States. Furthermore, she is a founding member of Doctors for America and a former executive director of the organization. According to Modern Healthcare’s rankings for 2019, Cohen is one of the Top 25 Women Leaders in the Healthcare Industry.
