Keyes and her four younger siblings were from a stable, loving home because their parents were middle-class professionals.

Keyes revealed that even though she had a loving family, she struggled with feelings of inadequacy and isolation as a young child. Although Keyes excelled academically at her convent institutions, she had a difficult time navigating her relationships with others, especially men. Keyes’s drinking habits began when she was only 14 years old. Keyes maintained her high standards while pursuing her degrees in law and accountancy at University College in Dublin.

She had completed law school but was afraid to practice law. She told Jennifer Falvey of the Daily Telegraph, “I always had this kind of predisposition to self-destruct, and I never did anything to completion, and although I was endowed with wits, I didn’t have the bravery to use them effectively.” Keyes, who had always been enthusiastic about writing, applied to a master’s program in journalism but was ultimately rejected.

Instead, Keyes moved to London, England after finishing college in 1986. She considered her desire to settle in a major city to be a sign of rebellion. Since she was at a loss to determine what she should do with her life, she began her career as a waitress. She devoted a great deal of her free time to drinking and social gatherings. After a few years working as a London accounting clerk, Keyes finally put her degree to use.

She kept on drinking excessively and feeling bad about herself. Keyes realized that her drinking was a result of her need to fit in, but she also realized that her life was a mess and that she yearned for a more conventional way of living. She drank two bottles of wine every day, it led to her making mistakes at work and ignoring her health. Keyes reportedly told Herald reporter Marian Pallister,

After completing his therapy, Keyes moved back to London and started penning novels. Just before she took an attempt at her own life, she had penned a few little pieces. Not wanting to write a novel, she sent her short stories to the Irish publishing house Poolbeg Press. In her letter, she mentioned that she was working on a novel (one that did not yet exist). After the publisher expressed interest in reading more of Keyes’ work, she quickly composed the first four chapters of Watermelon.

Keyes told the Herald’s Pallister, “It flowed out” when describing the novel’s release. Probably all I had to do was unlock that mental filing cabinet and read what was already there. In the 1995 novel Watermelon, protagonist Claire Webster finds herself abandoned by her husband James shortly after delivering a baby. After meeting another potential father, Claire and her baby travel back to Dublin to live with her family.

The book was a success with readers across the Atlantic, selling well in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

After Watermelon was released, things started looking up for Keyes personally. Tony Baines, an Englishman, became her husband on December 29, 1995. By 1996, Keyes had saved enough money to quit her job as an accountant, and she and her husband moved to Ireland. Dublin became their permanent residence.

Keyes overcame the obstacles she faced to write full-time by making the most of a terrible situation.

Keyes’ second novel, which she had worried wouldn’t be as successful as Watermelon, ended up being even more popular than the first. This novel set in London’s underbelly, Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, was released in 1996 and is a dark comedy. The main character is in her twenties, and she doesn’t have too much time left.
