Mark Gonzales Biography and Career:
On the first of June, 1968, Mark Gonzales was born. Pro skateboarder and artist “Gonz,” “The Gonz,” and other nicknames refer to him. Skateboarding’s most influential skater of all time title was given to him by Transworld Skateboarding magazine in December 2011. At the age of thirteen, Gonzales began skating for the first time at South Gate, California, United States.
With Tommy Guerrero and Natas Kaupas, he was one of the first street skateboarders to adopt a more modern, cutting-edge style when he was fifteen years old (subsequently dubbed “street skateboarding”). The “bean plant” maneuver he performed while riding an Alva board, his sponsor at the time, was featured on the cover of Thrasher magazine in November 1984. A cover of Thrasher and a spot on the Vision skateboard team made Gonzales a professional skateboarder.
In 1985, Vision helped Gonzales win the Oceanside street challenge with a sponsorship. The 1991 video “Video Days” by Blind Skateboards had a significant impact on the rise of street skating in the United States (a company he formed with Steve Rocco in 1989). As part of the 60/40 firm he created with Ron Chatman, Fabian Alomar and Joey Suriel were two of the skaters Gonzales brought to the Menace after he left Blind and founded ATM Click.
After moving to Deluxe Distribution, Gonzales used the Vision graphic for Real and Krooked signature models after previously utilizing it for an ATM Click design in 1993. San Francisco’s Embarcadero has been dubbed the “Gonz Gap” after Gonzales did an ollie from one wall to another platform while skating in the summer of 1986; the achievement also contributed to increasing interest in skateboarding in the region.
Street skateboarder Natas Kaupas helped Gonzales pioneer the use of handrails in the next year. The Wallenberg Set, a four-block-long and four-foot-high gap in the city of San Francisco, was first ollied by Gonzales. Pro skateboarder who participated in street skating’s early days said this in a 2007 interview: “The finest street skaters at that time were Mark Gonzales, Jesse Martinez, Tommy Guerrero, and Natas Kaupas, a Lithuanian dude.
According to an Adidas interview, Gonzales stated that he “wanted to work with my big brother doing construction—at the time I felt elderly but had a young wife” when asked about his participation with the Blind company. After Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen, Transworld Skateboarding voted Gonzales the third most influential skateboarder of all time in its annual survey a year later.
Curator and Londoner Emma Reeves penned the following introduction for Interview: “In fact, he’s been doing it for practically as long as he’s been skating: he’s always creating art. However, getting a first-hand look at the task is quite unusual.” Here’s where you can find out more about it: During an interview with Gonzales, Reeves admits that “zines” are the most liberating thing he has ever done.
Published in 2008, The Collected Fanzines includes the reproductions of previous zines that the artist and filmmaker Harmony Korine collaborated on together. Jason Schwartzman’s band, Coconut Records, used a song called “West Coast” in their music video, which was filmed in 1998 at a German museum and later changed for the music video.
Gonzales also directed and featured in the Coconut Records music video for “Any Fun” with Chlo Sevigny and skateboarder Alex Olson. Broken Dreams, Broken Poems, and Social Problems are some of his published works. A bibliography is required. New poems are always being written by Gonzales, according to research. Gonzales designed and painted the Supreme (brand) Flagship Store in London in 2011.
Gonzales would write letters to the New York store called “Supreme” in the early years of the business. Thus, Gonzales and Supreme have worked together on multiple occasions, most recently in their S/S21 collection. Supreme’s stores in New York (Manhattan), San Francisco, London, Paris, Tokyo (Shibuya), Nagoya, and Osaka Gonzales have created sculptures and paintings.
