Matisyahu Biography and Career:
On June 30, 1979, in the city of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Matisyahu was given the name Matthew Paul Miller as his given name. After spending some time in California, his family finally made their home in White Plains, New York. His family was comprised of Jewish deconstructionists. Matisyahu was brought up in the strictest of Jewish customs from an early age. He received his religious education in a Hebrew school, where he was expected to study the tenets of Judaism.
After some time, he enrolled in what was then known as the ‘White Plains Senior High School.’ Matisyahu, when he was a teenager, began to push back against the strict instructions, and he eventually left school as a result of this. During this time period, he developed a dependency on several narcotics. During the years when Matisyahu was still in his teens, he was a devoted follower of the rock band Phish. When he was 14 years old, he went on a trip for teens that was an adventure into the woods. There, he had the epiphany that his Jewish heritage was something to be proud of. As time went on, Matisyahu earned the reputation of being the “Jewish rapper child.”
Between the years 2001 and 2007, Matisyahu was involved with the Hasidic branch of Judaism. He eventually became quite interested in religious and philosophical topics. He abandoned his birth name in favor of the stage name “Matisyahu,” which is derived from the Hebrew phrase “Gift of God.” While living in Bend, Oregon, Matisyahu started off his career as a singer by performing as a rapper. He went on stage under the guise of “MC Truth” for more than a year. Matisyahu entered into a recording agreement with the Jewish music label known as “JDub Records” in the year 2004. In October of 2004, he released his first studio album, which was titled “Shake Off the Dust…Arise.”
In 2005, Matisyahu released the official version of his song titled “King Without a Crown.” The song was included on his first studio album, however, the version that was released as a single was a condensed version of the whole song. It was one of the most successful songs he had ever released. It peaked at number seven on the ‘Modern Rock Tracks chart and achieved a position of number 28 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ list. Trey Anastasio, a member of the band Phish, requested Matisyahu to join him on stage at the 2005 edition of the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Matisyahu accepted the invitation.
Through lyrical gymnastics and spontaneous beatboxing, he was able to garner the acclaim of the audience. Live at Stubb’s is the name of the live CD that Matisyahu recorded in 2006. It was captured at a live performance in Austin and released on the ‘Or Music’ label. This album began its journey on the “Billboard Reggae Albums Chart” at position number five. The video for the song “King Without a Crown” was included on the CD that I bought.
“Youth” was Matisyahu’s second studio album, and it was released in the year 2006. The purpose of the CD was to provide a platform for the opinions of today’s young people. There were allusions made in the songs’ lyrics to many aspects of the Jewish religion. On the ‘Billboard 200’ chart, ‘Youth’ made its debut at position number four. On the overall charts for reggae albums released in 2006, it debuted at position three overall.
Matisyahu embarked on a tour of the United States and Europe in 2005 and 2006, during which he performed live. “Billboard” magazine bestowed upon him the title of “Top Reggae Artist” that year (2006). In 2006, he was given the title of “Most Lovable Oddball” at the “Esky Music Awards” by the American magazine Esquire. This honor was presented to him at the “Esky Music Awards.”
‘Unsettled,’ a documentary film featuring Matisyahu, was awarded the ‘Grand Jury Prize for ‘Best Documentary Feature at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival. This honor was given for the film’s ‘Best Documentary Feature.’ The film focused on the lives and experiences of six Israeli youths during their formative years. The song “One Day” by Matisyahu was used by “NBC” as the background music for their promo for the “Olympics” in the year 2009.
The year 2009 saw the release of Matisyahu’s third studio album, titled “Light.” This record, too, went on to achieve tremendous success. It remained in the number one slot on the Reggae Albums list published by Billboard for a total of 34 weeks. In 2010, Matisyahu made his cinematic debut. In the movie “A Buddy Story,” he portrayed the role of “Chassid.” In the film “The Possession,” which came out in 2012, he has the role of “Tzadok,” a Jewish priest. The film was a supernatural horror flick that portrayed ‘Tzadok’ as a priest who was attempting to save his family from the evil that possessed them.
Matisyahu came out with his album titled “Spark Seeker” in the year 2012. It made its debut on the ‘Billboard 200’ chart at position number 19. 2014 saw the release of his fifth studio album, titled ‘Akeda,’ which was issued by him. The name of the album had allusions to the biblical tale of ‘The Binding of Isaac,’ which was the subject of the album. The digital extended play (EP) titled “Release the Bound” was issued by Matisyahu in the year 2016. It included new tracks. In 2017, he came out with his sixth studio album, titled “Undercurrent.”
Matisyahu has worked along with a number of other well-known artists. He has shared the stage with Kenny Muhammad and performed beatboxing. In addition to that, he has collaborated with J Ralph, Akon, and Shyne. In August of 2004, Matisyahu wed Tahlia, a student in the film program at New York University.
