Matt Kenseth Biography and Career:

Car number 151 from Columbus 151 Speedway, driven by Kenseth. He and his father, Roy, came to an agreement in which Roy would purchase a car and participate in races, and Matt would work on the car until he was old enough to compete. Kenseth began his stock car racing career at Madison International Speedway in 1988 when he was 16 years old. “When I was 13 years old, my father got a car and we raced it in Madison,” Kenseth recalled. “Neither of us understood much about anything, so it was a learning experience,” says the author.

In 1988 and 1989, he competed in more races.  On my third night out, I was awarded a feature film. In 1983, I published 15 features and was awarded two prizes.” Matt won a heat race on his very first night out in the Kropf car, according to Roy Kenseth, Matt’s father. “After a 20-lap battle with two of the strongest drivers at the circuit, Pete Moore and Dave Phillips, he was victorious on the third night. Matt was easy to work with. I knew then that he was going to be a racecar driver in the future.

In 1989, he competed for the points championship on Saturday nights at Wisconsin Dells. He finished second in the points standings and took home eight features. On Friday nights, he competed in approximately half of the races at Golden Sands Speedway and half of the races at Columbus 151 Speedway in Columbus, Ohio. Rich Bickle sold him a late model car in 1990, and he purchased it. When track champion Tony Strupp suffered a flat tire in the season-opening race at Slinger Super Speedway, Kenseth took over the lead and went on to win the race, which was his only victory of the season. He finished sixth in the season’s points standings and was named the track’s rookie of the year.

During that season, Kenseth competed in fifteen ARTGO events and raced in 40 feature races overall. After graduating from Cambridge High School that summer, Kenseth worked for Left-hander Chassis, a late model racecar chassis builder located just south of the Wisconsin-Illinois line, for four years, marketing and shipping parts. His triumph at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in 1991 made him the youngest winner in the series’ history and made him the youngest driver to win an ARTGO race.

He passed Joe Shear and Steve Holzhausen on the way to the victory, and he held off Steve and Tom Carlson in the process. 1992 proved to be a trying year for Kenseth. He finished first in three races and blew up more engines than he could keep track of. He was prepared to retire from racing at the end of the season. “I had the impression that we were at a halt,” he remarked. “I wasn’t making any progress. Towards the conclusion of the year, my father and I had some serious discussions.

We had to come up with the funds for a good program, else I would have informed him that I would rather not race.” Kipley Performance loaned Kenseth a motor for the season-ending race in La Crosse, and the team performed significantly better as a result. Kenseth designed a new automobile for 1993 that used a Kipley engine. With the car, he was able to win eight events at Madison and finish second overall in the points.

It took a while for Mike Butz to offer Kenseth the opportunity to race his late model, and it was a while before the team was able to quit suffering and start winning features. A last short track series race at Madison, La Crosse, and I-70 Speedway brought them the championship at the end of the season. He finished third in the overall standings. In Wisconsin International Raceway, Butz’s car was on display.
