When the renowned author Ann Patchett first met Maureen, she made the remark that “we’re going to be friends, because once you become friends with a book critic, they won’t review your books any longer.” But everyone understands that making a clever new buddy is more valuable than getting a wonderful rating any day.”

Maureen has been serving in the capacity of book reviewer for the NPR program Fresh Air for more than twenty years. In addition to that, she writes a column for The Washington Post and is a professor at Georgetown University, where she holds the Nicky and Jamie Grant Distinguished Professor of the Practice in Literary Criticism position. Both of them were “loner readers,” according to her own assessment since they shared a passion for reading and he was a voracious reader. After completing her undergraduate degree, Maureen went on to get her master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania.

It was during her time there that a friend of hers asked her to contribute to the Village Voice by writing a review of one of the local restaurants. This was a defining moment for Maureen, who had become weary of the restrictions that academic life imposed on her and had discovered that writing about books for an audience that was not comprised of scholars was “energizing.”

In addition to her contributions to the Washington Post and the Village Voice, Maureen has written reviews for a variety of publications, including the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and The Nation, amongst others. She is the recipient of the 1999 Edgar Award for Criticism, in addition to serving as an associate editor for Mystery and Suspense Writers and contributing to the publication.
