Maxine Peake Biography and Career:

Maxine Peake is an actor and narrator from the United Kingdom. She is best known for playing Twinkle in the BBC One comedy dinner ladies from 1998 to 2000. Peake was born in Westhoughton, Bolton on 14 July 1974, the second of Glenys (née Hall) and Brian Peake’s two daughters.

Her father worked as a truck driver before transitioning to the electrical business, while her mother worked as a part-time caregiver. Lisa, her elder sister, was born in 1965 and is a police officer. Peake’s parents divorced when she was nine years old, and she was raised by her mother until the age of fifteen.

Peake moved home with her grandpa when her mother relocated many miles away to finish her GCSE studies at Westhoughton High School, before continuing on to Canon Slade School in Bradshaw for her A-Levels. Her granddad urged her to cultivate her imagination and pursue a career in acting.

Peake joined the Octagon Youth Theatre in Bolton at the age of 13, followed by a stint with the Royal Exchange Youth Theatre in Manchester. She subsequently completed a two-year program in performing arts at Salford College of Technology.

She performed in performances with two of Bolton’s premier amateur theatre groups at this time: The Marco Players and The Phoenix Theatre Company. Peake was a member of the Salford chapter of the Communist Party of Great Britain in her childhood. Peake was a member of the Wigan Ladies rugby league squad throughout her adolescence.

Peake’s first efforts to get into the acting industry were unsuccessful. She was rejected by every theatrical school business in North West England and spent three years attempting unsuccessfully to get admission to Manchester Polytechnic Theatre School and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

However, at the age of 21, she was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Her efforts to get funding for her studies at RADA were documented in a 1996 documentary by The South Bank Show. She was eventually given the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship after being nominated by RADA.

Maxine Peake is in a long-term relationship with Pawlo Wintoniuk, an art director. Peake departed London in 2009 after 13 years. She said that living in Salford with Wintoniuk permitted her to pursue riskier choices and lower-paying theatrical gigs.

Peake has acted in a number of television and stage plays, including Victoria Wood’s dinner ladies, Channel 4’s Shameless, the BBC’s legal drama Silk, and opposite John Simm in the BBC drama The Hamlet, which depicts life in a Derbyshire village during World War I.

Peake dropped so much weight between the two seasons of dinner ladies, on the suggestion of Victoria Wood, that an explanation for her character, Twinkle, had to be put into the script.

Peake portrays Moors killer Myra Hindley in the 2006 television film See No Evil: The Moors Murders. Peake made her feature film debut in January 2009 as Angela in the film Clubbed.

Peake portrayed the title role in Miss Julie at Manchester’s Royal Exchange in 2012, having previously played Kristin in a 2000 production. In the BBC2 versions of Henry IV, Parts I and II, she portrayed Doll Tearsheet. Peake was named Associate Artist of the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester in September 2013.

Her involvement with the theatre dates all the way back to her adolescence when she was a member of the youth theatre. She has been in several major shows, including The Children’s Hour in 2008, for which she received a MEN Award, and Miss Julie in 2012, for which she received a Manchester Theatre Award. Sarah Frankcom, with whom she previously worked on The Masque of Anarchy for the 2012 Manchester International Festival, directed all of her performances at the Royal Exchange.

Building on this work, Frankcom directed her as the title role in a bold reimagining of Hamlet in September 2014. The demand for tickets was so high that the play was extended by one week, owing to the fact that it was “the theatre’s fastest-selling show in a decade.” “Peake’s delicate fury, her unique combination of focus and lightness, ensures that you want to follow her everywhere she appears,” the Guardian said of her performance.

A year later, she featured as “Caryl Churchill’s shape-shifting, doom-wreaking fairy” in Frankcom’s production of The Skriker. Lyn Gardner of The Guardian named the production one of the year’s best ten British plays.

Peake re-teamed with Sarah Frankcom, Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange, in 2016 to play Blanche Dubois in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. Peake’s portrayal in the part received much praise, with The Guardian calling it as “exquisite” and “breathtaking.”

Peake appeared in Metalhead, a December 2017 episode of Netflix’s anthology series Black Mirror. Hannibal and American Gods filmmaker David Slade directed the episode. Peake appears as Nellie in Mike Leigh’s 2018 film Peterloo, which is based on the 1819 Manchester Peterloo Massacre.

Peake co-starred in the 2018 film Funny Cow opposite Paddy Considine and Stephen Graham. Tony Pitts authored and performed in the picture, which garnered praise for Peake’s “magnificent” performance.

Peake played the main part of Winnie in Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days at the Royal Exchange Theatre in May 2018 and received critical praise. The Guardian said her performance as a “brilliant center, with scarcely a pause between hope and misery.” Following Happy Days, the theatre performed Peake’s drama Queens of the Coal Age. Queens of the Coal Age, adapted from her previous radio play, examines the 1993 pit closure protests in northern England by miners’ wives. The play garnered a mixed response from critics.

Peake appeared as Velvet Underground vocalist Nico in The Nico Project at the Manchester International Festival in July 2019. Peake reprises the character of Miss Fozzard from Patricia Routledge in the 2020 BBC version of Talking Heads.
