Ian McShane Biography and Career:

Ian McShane was born in Blackburn, England, to parents Harry and Irene McShane. His father, Harry McShane, was a former football player for Manchester United. A successful alumnus of the illustrious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After making his debut in the film The Wild and the Willing in 1962, he went on to feature in several other films, including Battle of Britain, If It Is Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium, The Last of Sheila, Villain (which also starred Richard Burton), Exposed, and Agent Cody Banks.

The Humbles have made their home in Venice Beach, California, with Gwen, Ian’s third wife. He has been married and divorced twice, and his second wife is the mother of his two children from a previous marriage.

McShane has had a successful and diverse career in British and American television. Among his many credits are the ground-breaking miniseries Roots from the 1970s, produced by David Wolper, and Trust, which the BBC and BBC America produced.

Other prominent parts that he has played on television include Heathcliff in the BBC adaptation of Wuthering Heights and the title character in The Caretaker, which won an Emmy and was produced by Granada TV and written by Harold Pinter.

McShane debuted as a singer in 2000 on London’s West End, starring as Darryl Van Horne in Cameron Mackintosh’s The Witches of Eastwick. Cameron Mackintosh directed the production. In the first production of Loot, he was cast as Hal. In the Chichester Festival, he was The Admirable Crichton, playing the title character. In The Glass Menagerie, he was Tom. And in The Great Knife, he was Charlie.

In The Promise’s successful London and New York productions, he shared the stage with the legendary actors Judi Dench and Ian McKellen. The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award was given to him for three of his performances at the Matrix Theatre. These performances include the world premiere of Larry Atlas’ Surrender of the Long Bond, the revivals of Inadmissible Evidence and Betrayal, and the award-winning Betrayal.

McShane was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama for his complex performance as Al Swearengen in Deadwood. For his compelling and appealing depiction, he was nominated for Lead Actor in 2005 by both the Emmys and the Screen Actors Guild. People magazine gave him the title of TV’s Sexiest Villain in 2005.

McShane was recognized as one of GQ’s “Men of the Year” after receiving several accolades for his work in the first season of Deadwood and winning several honors, including the annual prize given by the Television Critics Association for Individual Achievement in Drama.

McShane’s unique voice may be heard in two recent films produced by DreamWorks, the first being Kung Fu Panda, in which he portrays the villainous snow leopard Tai Lung, and the second being Shrek the Third, in which he voices Captain Hook. In addition to his work in The Golden Compass as Ragnar Sturlusson, he also performed the voice of Mr. Sergei Alexander Bobinsky in the animated film Coraline.

In the film Scoop, directed by Woody Allen and released in 2006, McShane appeared with Scarlett Johansson and Hugh Jackman. The same year, he appeared in a Warner Bros. film with Matthew McConaughey as a co-star (2006). In addition to his work with Renée Zellweger in the film Case 39, which was released in 2009, he acted opposite Johnny Depp as Blackbeard in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Captain Jack Sparrow was his adversary in that picture (2011).

In the film Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), in which he portrayed one of the seven dwarfs, McShane collaborated alongside Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, and Chris Hemsworth, all of whom appeared in the film as well. Recent films in which he has appeared include John Wick: Chapter 2 opposite Keanu Reeves and Grimsby, co-starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rebel Wilson (2017).
