That same year, they got Jason Williams from the Sacramento Kings for Mike Bibby.

Gasol was named NBA Rookie of the Year after the Grizzlies’ debut season. Despite the good draught class, GM Billy Knight was fired. After Knight’s retirement and the season, the franchise appointed Hall of Famer and former Los Angeles Laker Jerry West as general manager in 2002. With Randolph and Allen gone, the Grizzlies missed the playoffs for the first time since 2009–10 and tied their longest losing streak in franchise history with 19 straight losses from January 31 to March 17, 2018.

They also suffered their worst regular-season loss ever on March 22, losing 140–79 to the Charlotte Hornets, with point guard Mike Conley Jr. playing in all but one of those games. The Grizzlies tried to compete again with Conley and others early in the 2018–19 season, but they were 14th seed with a 22–33 record by February 5. Morant was chosen second overall in the 2019 NBA draught.
