They also won 50 games with Gasol and Williams. They met the San Antonio Spurs in the playoffs, who swept them in four games. Brown stepped down as coach in 2004–05. The Grizzlies were losing when Brown resigned, but West replaced him with TNT analyst and former coach Mike Fratello. In exchange for Shane Battier and Ishmael Smith, the Grizzlies dealt Hasheem Thabeet, DeMarre Carroll, and a future first-round selection to the Houston Rockets in February 2011. With Randolph and Allen gone, the Grizzlies missed the playoffs for the first time since 2009–10 and tied their longest losing streak in franchise history with 19 straight losses from January 31 to March 17, 2018.
They also suffered their worst regular-season loss ever on March 22, losing 140–79 to the Charlotte Hornets, with point guard Mike Conley Jr. playing in all but one of those games. The Grizzlies tried to compete again with Conley and others early in the 2018–19 season, but they were 14th seed with a 22–33 record by February 5. Marc Gasol was traded to the Toronto Raptors for Jonas Valaninas, Delon Wright, C. J. Miles, and a 2024 second-round lottery pick. Conley was dealt with the Jazz after the season for Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver, Jae Crowder, and the 23rd overall selection in the 2019 NBA draught. Morant was chosen second overall in the 2019 NBA draught.
