Michael Fabricant Biography and Career:

Michael Louis David Fabricant (born June 12, 1950) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He represents the Lichfield constituency in the English county of Staffordshire as a member of Parliament. Michael Fabricant served as the Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party for Parliamentary Campaigning, where he was in charge of the party’s strategy in marginal seats during the 2015 general election and subsequent by-elections. HS2 rail connection and statements made concerning Maria Miller’s resignation were the reasons for his dismissal from this job in April 2014.

Fabricant was born in Brighton, England, to Helena (née Freed; 1911-2004) and Isaac Fabricant, who came from a British Jewish family (1906-1989). All of his grandparents were born in Russia, including his paternal grandfather. He went to Brighton Secondary Technical School as well as Brighton, Hove, and Sussex Grammar School before settling in Brighton. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Loughborough University, where he studied economics. Afterward, he pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Sussex, where he graduated with a master’s degree in systems and econometrics in 1974, as well as at the Universities of Oxford, London, and the University of Southern California.

The International Broadcasting Electronics and Investment Group (IBEIG) selected him as director in 1979; he remained in that position until 1991, by which time his work had led him to places as diverse as Moscow, the Netherlands, Uganda, Italy, and Iceland. At the 1987 general election, he ran unsuccessfully in the safe Labour bastion of South Shields, finishing 13,851 votes behind the victor, David Clark, who had won the seat. Fabricant was chosen chairman of the Brighton Pavilion Conservative Association in 1990, and he served in that position until his election to the House of Commons in 1997.

Fabricant was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1992 general election for Mid Staffordshire, recovering the seat for the Conservatives after Sylvia Heal had won the seat in a by-election in 1990. He was elected to the seat with a majority of 6,236 votes, and he has served as a Member of Parliament ever since. On the 2nd of July, 1992, he delivered his inaugural address. Despite the fact that Mid Staffordshire was dissolved in the 1997 general election, Fabricant ran for and won the Lichfield constituency, which largely replaced it, by a margin of just 238 votes, a narrow victory (0.51 percent ). Since then, he has remained the Member of Parliament for Lichfield, extending his majority to 4,426 in 2001, 7,080 in 2005, 17,683 in 2010, and 18,189 in 2015, according to the latest available figures.

Fabricant began serving on the European Legislation Select Committee in 1992, and he continued to serve on the committee until the 1997 general election. His membership on the National Heritage Select Body began in 1993, and he continued to serve on that committee until his appointment as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Financial Secretary of the Treasury, Michael Jack, in 1996.

As a result of the Conservative Party’s loss in the 1997 general election, Fabricant was appointed to the (then-named) Culture, Media, and Sport Select Committee, where he remained until being appointed to the Home Affairs Select Committee in 2000. As a result of the 2001 general election, he was re-elected to the Culture, Media and Sport committee, and he was also appointed as the head of the Information Committee at that time.

In 2003, he was promoted to the frontbench of the Opposition as a trade and industry spokesperson under former Prime Minister Michael Howard. His position as spokesperson for economic matters was promoted to him later in the calendar year. The 2005 general election saw him promoted to Opposition Whip, and he retained the job upon the selection of David Cameron as the new leader of the Conservative Party.

Fabricant issued a leaflet titled “The Alliance” in November 2012, in which he urged for a political pact between UKIP and the Conservative Party in return for a vote on whether to remain in or leave the EU. For his part, Fabricant said throughout the 2016 EU Referendum campaign that he would vote to exit the EU. According to this firm believer in free trade, “I feel that we are a part of the global economy and that we will be considerably richer dealing worldwide in the future than we are now.”

Fabricant “often court[s] controversy on Twitter” and has been chastised for making a joke about bestiality with llamas when questioned about his sexual orientation when asked about his sexual orientation. After tweeting “about time” in response to Maria Miller’s resignation as a cabinet minister, Fabricant was fired from his position as Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party. According to George Eaton of the New Statesman, Fabricant’s sacking was motivated by his threat to rebel against the HS2 rail project and was necessary to deter other potential Conservative rebels on the same issue. He is opposed to HS2 because of the financial and environmental costs associated with construction.

Following an interaction between Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Rod Liddle on Channel 4 News the previous evening, he came under more fire when he tweeted that he “could never attend” on a debate show with her because he “would either wind up with a brain hemorrhage or punch her in the neck.” Former Shadow Minister for Women and Equality Gloria De Piero characterized the tweet as “utterly disgusting,” while a spokesperson for the Conservative Party said that the MP’s comments were “very inappropriate.” Fabricant later expressed regret, but Alibhai-Brown considered his apology to be “useless.”

Conservatives such as Fabricant, in her opinion, believe that “people like me should be ayahs [domestic maids] or selling you curry,” respectively. Fabricant said a few days later that he was “still very humiliated and ashamed” and that his tweet had “looked to have undone” his socially liberal voting record during the previous 20 years, which he had maintained.
