Michael Stipe Biography and Career:

Singer, songwriter, and director Michael Stipe is the frontman for the American alternative music band R.E.M. When he met Peter Buck, who worked at a nearby record store, the two hit it off and eventually decided to form a band while he was still in art school. R.E.M., a landmark American rock band, was formed when Mike Mills and Bill Berry joined soon after the group’s inception as songwriters. Two hits from the band’s debut album, Murmur, quickly became radio staples.

After the success of their first hit, “The One I Love,” from the album Document, the band went on to record a string of critically and commercially lauded albums. Numerous fans and critics alike rank Out of Time and Automatic for the People as the band’s two best and most commercially successful albums. The band has a long history of success, with platinum-selling albums including Green, Monster, Up, Around the Sun, Accelerate, and Collapse into Now. When he wasn’t making music, he tried his hand at directing movies and acting. Single Cell is the name of the production business he founded and utilised to create two films, one of which was nominated for an Academy Award.

John Michael Stipe was born on January 4, 1960, in Decatur, Georgia to parents who were both serving in the United States Army.

After graduating from Collinsville (Illinois) High School in 1978, he attended the University of Georgia in Athens to major in art. Since punk music was a big interest of his, he started spending time at the Wuxtry record store in 1980, where he met Peter Buck, the shop clerk, and a developing guitarist. So the two of them started writing music together and eventually formed a band.

After a year, in 1980, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry joined them to form the alternative rock band R.E.M. It was around 1980 that the band members made the collective decision to forgo further study in favor of pursuing music full-time. The next year, the band played their first gig to a wildly enthusiastic crowd in Athens, Georgia.

The band’s first single, “Radio Free Europe,” was published by Hib-Tone in 1981. The band signed with I.R.S. Records after the success of “Chronic Town” and released the album’s B-side, “Chronic Town EP,” in 1982. Released in 1983, “Murmur” was the group’s first studio album.

It was in the unreleased 45-minute Super-8 film Just Like a Movie that he made his acting debut in 1983. During the making of their third album, 1985’s “Fables of the Reconstruction,” the band members began to clash.

In the same year that their contract with I.R.S. expired, they signed with Warner Bros. Records and released their first album, titled Green. His friendship with Tori Amos resulted in a duet with her on the Don Juan DeMarco soundtrack in 1994, entitled “It Might Hurt a Bit.” The song was supposed to be on a 1995 film soundtrack released by Empire Records, but it was never released.

During the worldwide tour that followed the commercial success of their last album, 1994’s “Monster,” drummer Berry suffered a brain aneurysm and required immediate surgery.

After the release of their commercially successful album “New Adventures in Hi-Fi” in 1996, which topped the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom, Berry quit the band, allowing the remaining three members to continue on without him. Their 1998 album, “Up,” received mixed reviews from critics. While the album did well on the charts, it was a commercial failure for the band despite reaching the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Unrelated to his musical career, he also published the photo book “Two Times Intro: On the Road with Patti Smith” in 1998. He founded his own film production company, Single Cell, through which he directed the critically acclaimed features American Movie and Being John Malkovich (for which he was nominated for three Academy Awards).

Some other video compilations were also made available to the general audience. To aid in Hurricane Katrina relief, he published an extended play in 2006 that featured cover versions of Joseph Arthur’s “In the Sun.”

In 2008, he collaborated with fashion house Lacoste to release a limited “holiday collector edition” of a polo shirt using his own design. His 2013 song “Rio Grande,” a collaboration with Courtney Love, appeared in the film Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys.

He made his solo debut at New York City’s Webster Hall in December 2014, opening for Patti Smith. He has voiced characters in a few Hollywood films, notably “Color of a Brisk and Leaping Day” (1996) and “Olive, the Other Reindeer” (1999). Guest-starring roles on shows such as The Colbert Report, The Simpsons, Sesame Street, and “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” are among his many television credits.
