Midland RockHounds Biography and Career:

A Minor League Baseball team headquartered in Midland, Texas, the Midland RockHounds compete in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The squad, which competes in the Double-A Central, is the Double-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, which is a big-league baseball club in Oakland, California. The RockHounds play their home games at Momentum Bank Ballpark, which opened in 2002 and has a capacity of 4,709 spectators. They were a member of the Texas League from 1972 to 2020, and they won seven Texas League championships during that time period: in 1975.

They were also a member of the American Association from 1972 to 2020. The Midland Cubs (1972–1984) and Midland Angels (1985–1998) were the teams that preceded the RockHounds in the Midland League. Even though Midland has been an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics since 1999, the team was previously associated with the Chicago Cubs from 1972 to 1984 and then with the California Angels from 1985 to 1998.  To pay homage to the region’s oil and gas sector, the squad was dubbed the “Rockhounds,” which is a geologist’s slang term for rockhounds. Throughout their history, the RockHounds have garnered a slew of honors and trophies.

The Midland RockHounds earned the Texas League Organization of the Year award in 1990 and 1994 under the ownership of the Angels, and again in 2002 under the ownership of the RockHounds. Midland received the Bob Frietas Award, which is the top honor in Double-A baseball, in 1995. General Manager Monty Hoppel has been recognized as Executive of the Year three times throughout his tenure with the team (1991, 1995, and 2002). Midland made their first-ever postseason participation as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels in 1995, and it was the team’s first postseason appearance in 20 years overall. It was also the first season in which Midland attracted more than 200,000 fans in a single season, a milestone that was replicated the following year.

Many in Minor League Baseball were taken aback by the accomplishment, given the fact that the Midland-Odessa area has only little more than 200,000 residents in total. In 2002, the RockHounds relocated to Momentum Bank Ballpark, which is located on the west side of Midland as part of the Scharbauer Sports Complex. Since then, the RockHounds have drawn an average of more than 250,000 spectators per season. They had formerly played in what is now known as Christensen Stadium, located in the northeastern part of Midland. In 2005, the Rockhounds won their first-ever Texas League Championship, a feat that was accomplished in only their second season. In 1975, they were known as the Cubs because they shared the title with the Lafayette Drillers.

In 2006, they won the South Division’s second-half championship, but they were defeated in the division playoffs by the eventual champion Corpus Christi Hooks, who went on to win the World Series. The RockHounds won the John H. Johnson President’s Award in 2007, becoming the third Texas League franchise to do so, following the El Paso Diablos and the Tulsa Drillers. The award is the greatest honor in Minor League baseball for a franchise. When the RockHounds defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in the Texas League Championship Series three games to one in 2009, they earned their second Texas League pennant in franchise history. In 2010, the RockHounds made it back to the Texas League championship game, however, this time they were defeated by the Naturals.

As a result, the RockHounds won their fourth consecutive Texas League championship in 2017, becoming the first team to do so since the Fort Worth Panthers won six straight from 1920 to 1925. The RockHounds were reassigned to the Double-A Central Division in 2021, as part of Major League Baseball’s restructuring of Minor League Baseball in that year. The Midland Rockhounds have always had a live play-by-play broadcast that has been made accessible to the public to listen in on.

Since the Rockhounds’ inception in 1972, KCRS (AM) has been the network that has broadcast around 95 percent of its games. Some midday games in 2008 were not broadcast on the radio because of contracts with Rush Limbaugh and other radio personalities. For the 2010 season, the Rockhounds will be broadcasting from KMRK 96.1 FM, where they previously resided. In both instances, Bob Hards remained the Rockhounds’ public face, a role he has kept for 19 continuous years and which he now holds. When the Rockhounds returned to KCRS in 2013, they did so with the understanding that weekday day games would be interrupted to accommodate talk shows that were already booked on the station.
