Milwaukee Bucks Biography and Career:
National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise the Milwaukee Bucks, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and competing in the Eastern Conference (NBA). There have been two NBA championships and three conference championships for the Bucks (1971, 1974, and 2021).
There was a last-place divisional result for the Milwaukee Bucks when they were created in 1968. However, the Milwaukee Bucks won a coin flip that resulted in their picking college star Lew Alcindor as the first overall choice in the 1969 NBA draught, even though they had won 11 more games than their fellow expansion club the Phoenix Suns (known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from 1971).
Alcindor helped the Bucks win 29 more games in 1969–70, boosting their record to 56–26, good enough for second place in the NBA (behind the Knicks, who went on to remove Milwaukee from contention in the Eastern Division playoffs). The Bucks acquired future Hall of Fame point guard, Oscar Robertson, the following offseason, and Robertson guided the Bucks to a league-best 66-16 record in 1970–71.
To win the NBA championship in only their third season, the Bucks beat the San Francisco Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Baltimore Bullets with relative ease in the playoffs. Following three seasons, Milwaukee qualified for the NBA playoffs, including a trip to the 1974 NBA finals, where the Bucks fell to the Boston Celtics in a seven-game series.
Embry, who became the first black general manager in professional sports when he was hired by the Bucks in 1972, orchestrated a six-player deal that sent Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers in 1974. It all started in 1979–80, when a new Milwaukee Bucks squad led by Don Nelson and included big Marques Johnson, guard Sidney Moncrief, and guard-forward Junior Bridgeman set a club record of 12 consecutive postseason berths.
They reached the conference finals on back-to-back occasions in 1982–83 and 1983–84 but fell to the 76ers of Philadelphia and the Celtics of Boston. In 1985–86, Milwaukee made their third Eastern Conference finals trip in four years, but the Celtics once again denied the Bucks a place in the NBA finals by defeating them.
A seven-year postseason drought began in the 1991–92 season when the Bucks failed to make it beyond the second round in the next five seasons. In 1994, the Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA draught lottery and picked Glenn Robinson as a forward.
In 1998–99, Robinson and the Bucks’ sharpshooting guard Ray Allen helped the team return to the playoffs. There were two seasons in a row that the Indiana Pacers beat Milwaukee in the first round of the playoffs. The Bucks made it back to the Eastern Conference finals in 2000-01, but they were defeated by the 76ers in seven games.
Redd led the Bucks to three more playoff appearances in the next decade, but greater success evaded them: Milwaukee had only three winning seasons in the first decade of the century. A year after the 2012–13 season, the Milwaukee Bucks made the playoffs despite a losing overall record, but the next season saw the lowest record in NBA history and a franchise-low 15 wins.
Jason Kidd’s arrival as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2014–15 marked a spectacular turnaround for the franchise, who went on to win 26 games and make the playoffs. The next season, though, Milwaukee soon fell back to the NBA’s bottom levels. The Bucks’ return to the postseason in 2016-17 was aided by the meteoric rise of dynamic wing Giannis Antetokounmpo to prominence.
When Antetokounmpo stepped up, Milwaukee’s management became fed up with Kidd and dismissed him during the 2017–18 season, which resulted in a first-round playoff defeat for the second year in a row for Milwaukee.
During the off-season, the Bucks signed defensive-minded coach Mike Budenholzer, and under his guidance, they rapidly became one of the best-coached squads in the NBA, finishing the season with the best record in the league. It was the first time in 18 years that the team made it to the conference finals, but they lost to the Toronto Raptors there.
The Milwaukee Bucks again had the best regular-season record in the NBA in 2019–20, however, they lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Miami Heat in a five-game series. Despite mounting demands to dismiss coach Mike Budenholzer after the team’s two straight missed postseason appearances, the Bucks stuck with their plan and signed point guard Jrue Holiday, who would provide solid leadership on the floor as well as more depth on the defensive end.

In 2020–21, the Milwaukee Bucks will be one of the top NBA teams, although they will be seeded third in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Holiday, All-Star Khris Middleton, and Giannis Antetokounmpo all played crucial roles in Milwaukee’s NBA Finals comeback, as the club fought back from several series deficits.
After trailing Phoenix Suns 2–0 in the finals, Antetokounmpo put on one of the greatest finals performances in NBA history, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to four straight victories (which included Antetokounmpo scoring a remarkable 50 points in the deciding sixth game) to win the franchise’s second league championship.
