Minnesota Twins Biography and Career:

United States professional baseball team the Minnesota Twins, with its home stadium located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and competing in the American League (AL). The Senators were the team’s name in Washington, D.C., from 1901 through 1960, when they relocated to Minneapolis in 1961. Three World Series triumphs (1924, 1987, and 1991) and six American League championships have been achieved by the team. One of the first eight American League franchises, the Washington Senators were established in 1901. Between 1903 and 1911, the Senators had some of the worst winning percentages in baseball history, finishing last or second-to-last in nine straight seasons.

Because of this streak, a newspaper columnist coined the phrase “Washington—first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League,” which has since become a household bon mot. During his 21-year big league career, in which he played exclusively in Washington, future Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson was the only bright spot for these Senator teams. In 1921, Johnson was joined by slugger Goose Goslin, and the Senators went on to win their first pennant and World Series triumph in 1924, defeating the New York Giants in a dramatic manner in the 12th inning of the seventh game of the series. In 1925 and 1933, the Senators made it back to the World Series, but they were defeated both times.

However, even after signing Harmon Killebrew, one of baseball’s all-time great power hitters, in 1954, the Senators were still in the bottom of the American League standings every year since their last playoff appearance in 1933. In 1961, the Senators relocated to Minneapolis, a city with a booming baseball market. Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat joined Killebrew as the team’s studs when the franchise was renamed the Twins, and they advanced to the World Series in 1965. A future seven-time American League batting champion, Minnesota signed Rod Carew in 1967.

During his first season in Minnesota, Carew earned the American League Rookie of the Year award and went on to lead the Twins to the American League Central Division titles in 1969 and 1970. First-year manager Tom Kelly led the Twins to a seven-game World Series triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987, ending the team’s decades-long run of mediocrity. In 1991, the Twins and Atlanta Braves shared the distinction of becoming the first “worst-to-first” turnarounds in modern baseball history when they competed in the “Fall Classic,” a game that pitted the two teams against each other. Four of the World Series games were decided by a home team’s game-winning hit.

When the Twins were on the verge of elimination, they won games six and seven in extra innings, the first highlighted by Kirby Puckett’s 11th-inning home run and the second by Minnesota starting pitcher Jack Morris’ remarkable 10-inning complete-game shutout performance.. Commissioner Bud Selig advocated the expulsion of the Minnesota Twins and the Montreal Expos from the Major League Baseball in 2001 because they were two of the league’s least profitable franchises. By being compelled to play out their lease at Hubert H.

Humphrey Metrodome in 2002, the Twins essentially removed the threat of relocation and gave the team time to plan for a more profitable baseball-only venue (Target Field, which opened in 2010). However, the team failed to go to the World Series on each occasion when they won three straight AL Central Division crowns from 2002 through 2006, and the team’s fourth divisional triumph of the early 21st century. It was the first time in two years that the Minnesota Twins made it to the playoffs, but they lost in the first round.

In 2010, the Twins won the AL Central for the second time in three years, but their play subsequently deteriorated, and they finished in last place in the division on multiple occasions after that. In 2016, the club finished with a record of 59–103, which was the poorest since the squad relocated to Minnesota. It was a remarkable turnaround for the Twins, who won 85 games to reach the American League Wild Card Game the following year. The squad became the first to make the playoffs after a season with at least 100 losses.

In 2018, the Minnesota Timberwolves won 78 games, but they were way outside the postseason picture. For the first time since 1965, the Twins had a successful season in 2019, winning 101 games and smashing a franchise record of 307 home runs. Minnesota, on the other hand, was swept in the first round of the postseason. This season was cut short due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the Minnesota Twins losing their 18th consecutive playoff game, making it the longest streak in North American major team sports history.
