Mo’Nique Biography and Career:

The stage name Mo’Nique belongs to American stand-up comedian and actress Monique Angela Hicks (née Imes; born December 11, 1967).  She has won Grammy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Academy Awards, and BAFTA Awards.She debuted as a member of The Queens of Comedy and originally attracted attention for her stand-up comedy skills. She was nominated for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2002. As Nicole “Nikki” Parker in the UPN television series The Parkers (1999–2004), Mo’Nique made her foray into mainstream film and television.

She also made appearances in Phat Girlz (2006) and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (2008).She received positive reviews for her work in the 2009 movie Precious, for which she won a number of accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming her the fourth African American woman to receive the honour. Since then, Mo’Nique has acted as Ma Rainey in the HBO miniseries Bessie (2015), for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination, and hosted The Mo’Nique Show (2009–2011).

The daughter of engineer Alice Imes and drug counsellor Steven Imes, Jr., Mo’Nique was born on December 11, 1967, in Woodlawn, Baltimore County, Maryland. She is one of four children, the youngest. After Milford Mill High School in Baltimore County issued its 1985diploma, Mo’Nique enrolled at Morgan State University.  She graduated from the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland in 1987. Prior to becoming an actress, Monique worked as a customer service agent for MCI in Hunt Valley, Maryland.


Her brother Steve dared her to perform at an open mic night at the downtown Baltimore Comedy Factory Outlet, which is where she made her stand-up comedy debut.Mo’Nique disclosed in a 2008 interview with Essence that her brother Gerald had molested her from the ages of 7 to 11; he later molested another girl and received a 12-year prison sentence. Mo’Nique severed all ties with Gerald after the birth of her twin boys in 2005.

On Oprah on April 19, 2010, he acknowledged that he had abused her sexually for a number of years. Skinny Women Are Evil: Notes of a Bigg Girl in a Small-Minded World, written by Mo’Nique, is a bestseller. In 2006, she also published the cookbook Skinny Cooks Can’t Be Trusted. George Wilborn and Mo’nique co-hosted a radio show on WHUR in Washington, D.C. She periodically filled in for afternoon host Michael Baisden in 2006 while his contract with ABC Radio was being extended.

She also assumed the role of Showtime at the Apollo hostess. On the Oxygen cable network, she served as the hostess and executive producer of Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance, a beauty competition for plus-sized women. She served as the host of the 2003, 2004, and 2007 BET Awards, as well as the 2008 BET Awards. With her opening rendition of Beyoncé’s single “Crazy in Love” in July 2004, she earned favourable reviews. She performed “Déjà Vu” by Beyoncé in 2007.

Mo’Nique has played a variety of supporting parts in movies. Alongside Martin Lawrence, she starred in the comedy Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins in 2008. Beerfest, 3 Strikes, Two Can Play That Game, Half Past Dead, and Soul Plane all featured her in supporting parts. In 2008, Radio One contracted her to host her own radio show. Due to their agreements with Michael Baisden, some Radio One stations were unable to air it, hence these stations with a local lineup were mostly where it was heard.

Mo’Nique opted to leave the show on March 18, 2009, to “advance her career in television, film, and comedy.” The show ran until that date. Mo’Nique gave an excellent performance that Time magazine named the Best Female Performance of 2009.

In addition to the Independent Spirit Award and the BAFTA Award, she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. According to Mo’Nique in November 2009, “Because Hattie McDaniel was such an incredible person, I am the owner of the rights to her life narrative and I cannot wait to share it. At a period when we were genuinely not accepted, she had to confront the prejudice of black and white [society]. She then played Ma Rainey in the biographical movie Bessie in 2015, to critical acclaim and a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. She played her final on-screen or television role in 2016. She claimed that Lee Daniels, Oprah Winfrey, and Tyler Perry had blackballed her ever since she failed to promote Precious in 2009 in May 2017. Kenny Mung, an accountant, and Mo’Nique were temporarily engaged. She wed Mark Jackson in 1997 and they were married till 2001.
