Mufti Muhammad Biography and Career:

An experienced PDP politician, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, served as the 12th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in India. March 1, 2015, was the day he took office. That was Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s second inauguration as the state’s governor. Previously, Sayeed held this position from November 2, 2002, until November 2, 2005.

After the PDP and the BJP agreed to form a coalition government after the 2014 Assembly Elections, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was unanimously chosen as the next CM. Narinder Nath Vohra, the Governor of the state, delivered the oath of office to Sayeed. As the Deputy Chief Minister of J&K, Nirmal Singh was sworn in as an experienced BJP campaigner. Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and senior BJP leaders including L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were among the dignitaries in attendance for the swearing-in event.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in the 2014 elections. With 16,983 votes, Sayeed won the Anantnag assembly seat, while Hilal Ahmad Shah of the Congress came in second with 10,955. Mehboob Beig, the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) candidate running from the same seat as Sayeed, resigned from the JKNC, increasing Sayeed’s prospects of victory. He promised to aid Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in whatever manner he could, including engaging in door-to-door campaigns. Mehbooba Mufti, the daughter of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, said that the struggle between the PDP and the BJP will take place, and the PDP patron began to attack the BJP instead of other political parties.

Sayeed stated that certain forces were attempting to undermine J&K’s particular character, a possible allusion to the BJP’s stance on Article 370 and its outreach to erstwhile separatist leaders in the state. A native of Bijbehara, Jammu, and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was born on 12 January 1936 at Baba Mohalla. He graduated from SP College in Srinagar and earned a law degree there. Aligarh Muslim University awarded him a Master’s degree in Arab History.

Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed, the current PDP president, is one of his daughters. After Mufti’s swearing-in as the Union Home Minister in 1989, his third daughter Rubaiya Sayeed made headlines. Only when the Central Government released five of its citizens was she liberated by the insurgent group Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). The political climate of the state was drastically altered by this occurrence.
In the late 1950s, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed joined the Democratic National Conference (DNC). The District Convenor of the DNC was Sayeed’s first official position inside the organization. When Sayeed was elected to the state legislature in 1962, he represented the city of Bijbehara. Five years later, he was re-elected to the same seat.

As a result, Ghulam Mohammed Sadiq, the head of the DNC, named him as his assistant. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, on the other hand, split with the party’s leadership a few years later and joined the Indian National Congress (INC). According to others, he was one of the very few political figures in Jammu & Kashmir who was instrumental in turning the INC into a potent opponent to the DNC.

In 1972, the Congress administration appointed Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as a cabinet minister. In addition, he was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party and the president of the Pradesh Congress. After he lost two straight elections, his political career took a serious fall. However, Sayeed maintained his fine job and organized the people to overthrow the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) administration in 1984 as a brilliant politician and a skilled administrator. In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi, India’s prime minister, assigned Sayeed the Union Cabinet responsibility of Tourism and Civil Aviation. In 1987, Sayeed joined the Jan Morcha, headed by V. P. Singh, ending his affiliation with the Congress. In 1989, he became the Union Minister of Home Affairs.

When Narasimha Rao was in charge of the Congress, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed rejoined the party. However, he left the party in 1999 and formed his own party at the same time, which he did in 1999. The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party was the name he gave to his political party (JKPDP). His political career soared to new heights with the establishment of this organization. Sayeed ascended to the position of state chief minister in 2002. A coalition with the Indian National Congress (INC) was established to rule the state from November 2002 until November 2005, when his party gained 16 seats in the legislative assembly.

In the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the PDP had one member each by 2004. The United Progressive Alliance-I counted on it as a reliable ally. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sayeed’s party’s chances improved as it won three of the state’s six parliamentary seats. The PDP demonstrated its success in the Lok Sabha elections by capturing 28 of the state’s 87 assembly seats, the highest of any party. In order to create a government, the PDP and the BJP teamed together. On March 1, 2015, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was sworn in as the second Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
