Nate Diaz Biography and Career:

Nathan Donald Diaz is an American professional mixed martial artist who is now a free agent. He was born on April 16, 1985, in the United States. The time that Diaz spent competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) earned him the title of “The Ultimate Fighter 5” and made him one of the most famous fighters in the world.

Diaz competed in the UFC for nearly 15 years. Diaz participated in World Extreme Cagefighting, Strikeforce, and Pancrase prior to signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. With a total of 16 bonus awards, Diaz is tied for third place among UFC fighters.

His mother, Melissa (née Womble), is of Anglo and Mexican descent, while his father, Robert Diaz, is of Mexican and Anglo descent. He was brought up in Stockton, California, together with his brother Nick and sister Nina. He was a student at Tokay High School, and when he was 11 years old, he started training in martial arts with his older brother, Nick.

Before beginning his professional mixed martial arts career, Diaz faced off against Robert Limon in a bare-knuckle mixed martial arts battle on July 20, 2002, when he was only 17 years old. Since then, footage of the fight has surfaced, and it is thought that this was his first encounter in a competitive setting.

After making his debut in mixed martial arts as a legitimate professional, Diaz fought mostly for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). At WEC 24, which took place in 2006, he competed for the WEC Lightweight Championship against Hermes Franca, who was the reigning champion at the time. After this event, the WEC was bought by Zuffa, LLC, which was the parent company of the UFC at the time.

This was the last event staged by the WEC. Jens Pulver’s squad included Diaz as a competitor for season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter, which featured only lightweights. Diaz competed in the tournament. In the first round of the preliminary competition, Diaz won through submission over Rob Emerson. In the first round of the quarterfinal competition, he won via submission against fellow Team Pulver colleague Corey Hill with a triangle choke.

Diaz advanced to the championship match after submitting another member of Team Penn, Gray Maynard, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Diaz squared off against a member of his own team, Manvel Gamburyan. Gamburyan dislocated his right shoulder while trying a takedown, which led to Diaz winning the fight through submission in the second round.

As a consequence, Gamburyan was forced to tap out, giving Diaz the victory. Diaz emerged victorious, taking home the title of The Ultimate Fighter 5. After successfully submitting Alvin Robinson and Junior Assuncao, Diaz wanted fights against opponents of a higher caliber. At UFC Fight Night 13, he was scheduled to face Kurt Pellegrino as his opponent. In the second round, Diaz won the fight against Pellegrino after submitting him with a triangle choke.

Pellegrino was able to give Diaz some time to flex for the crowd while he was putting the choke on him, and he showed him two middle fingers before he surrendered. In the main event of UFC Fight Night 15, Diaz went on to earn a split decision victory against Josh Neer, a seasoned fighter.

After that, Diaz competed against Clay Guida, a former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, at UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn 2, but he was defeated by a split decision. Using his wrestling skills, Guida was able to knock Diaz down many times. Diaz suffered his first defeat in the UFC at the hands of Guida, who won through a split decision. This match was also Diaz’s first appearance on a pay-per-view card.

Joe Stevenson, a former King of the Cage Welterweight Champion and another Ultimate Fighter victor, introduced himself to Diaz during the 9th season finale of The Ultimate Fighter. Throughout all three rounds, Stevenson was able to take down Diaz at will, and Diaz ultimately lost by unanimous decision.

After suffering two straight defeats by decision, Diaz was scheduled to fight Melvin Guillard in the main event at UFC Fight Night 19. At 2:30 of round 2, Diaz won the fight after forcing his opponent to tap out to a guillotine choke.
On January 11, 2010, Diaz competed against Gray Maynard in the main event of UFC Fight Night 20.

This fight was a rematch from when the two fighters battled each other in the semi-finals of the Ultimate Fighter 5 lightweight competition, which Diaz won. Maynard was awarded the victory through a disputed split decision against Diaz, which resulted in Diaz’s defeat. According to the FightMetric reports, Maynard was victorious in rounds two and three.

Nate contemplated considering a permanent move up in weight to the 170 lb. weight class after suffering defeat in three of his last four bouts. He said, “I don’t earn enough money to have to drop this much weight therefore I’d prefer to fight at 170 and just go to 155 every once in a while.”

At UFC 111, which took place on March 27, 2010, Diaz made his debut in the welterweight division against Rory Markham, a striking specialist who was trained by Miletich Fighting Systems. Markham came in with a weight of 177, while Diaz weighed in at the Welterweight limit of 171. As a result, the bout was modified to a catchweight fight after the weigh-ins were completed. Diaz was able to finish the bout off with a first-round technical knockout victory.

After Diaz’s victory against Markham, he said that he would try his hand at fighting in both weight divisions. His second bout, which took place in the Welterweight division and was held at UFC 118 on August 28, 2010, was against Marcus Davis, a former professional boxer. The fight was voted Fight of the Night because Diaz killed Davis out with a guillotine choke submission in the final round, rendering Davis unconscious.

The fight between Diaz and Leon Edwards was supposed to take place on May 15, 2021, at UFC 262 and serve as the event’s co-headliner. It would have been the first time that a fight that was not the main event and did not involve a championship was planned for five rounds. However, owing to a small injury received by Diaz, the fight had to be postponed to UFC 263, where it finally took place over the course of five rounds as well. Edwards was able to maintain control for a large part of the fight, although he was seriously startled by blows late in the fifth round. The bout was decided by a unanimous decision in favor of Edwards (49–46, 49–46, 49–46).

Diaz was supposed to compete against Khamzat Chimaev in the main event of UFC 279 on September 10, 2022. This was to be the last fight in Diaz’s contract with the UFC. On the other hand, Chimaev arrived at the weigh-ins on September 9 weighing in at 178.5 pounds, which is seven and a half pounds above the limit for a welterweight bout that is not for a championship.

Chimaev was disqualified from his fight against Diaz because he failed to make the required weight. Diaz’s opponent in the main event turned out to be Tony Ferguson. In the fourth round, Diaz won the fight after forcing a submission with a guillotine choke on his opponent. Diaz received his second bonus award for Performance of the Night thanks to this victory.

Diaz made the decision not to re-sign with the UFC before his fight with Ferguson, which resulted in Diaz being a free agent after the fight was over. Diaz’s brother Nick is also a professional mixed martial arts fighter who competes for the UFC. Both of the Diaz brothers are staunch supporters of cannabis, and their company, California Finest, has its own licensed brand of pre-rolled marijuana joints.

They are presently operating Nick Diaz Academy in Stockton, California, which is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school. Additionally, they established a CBD firm called Game Up Nutrition. Since he was 18 years old, he has generally adhered to a vegan diet, however, he does confess to sometimes eating fish. On the 20th of June in 2018, it was revealed that Diaz’s girlfriend had successfully delivered their daughter.
