ND Stevenson Biography and Career:

Nate Diana Stevenson, sometimes known as ND Stevenson(formerly Noelle Stevenson; born December 31, 1991), is a cartoonist and producer from the United States. The animated television series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which ran from 2018 to 2020, was created, show-run by, and executive produced by him. He is also well-known for creating the fantasy webcomic Nimona and contributing to the Lumberjanes comic series.

The work of Stevenson has received numerous Eisner Awards, a Daytime Emmy Award, and a GLAAD Media Award. Stevenson is non-binary, and in works like The Fire Never Goes Out, he has written about being transgender. ND Stevenson was born to Diana and Hal Stevenson in Columbia, South Carolina, on December 31, 1991. He is the third child of five children.

Prior to entering A.C. Flora High School, Stevenson was homeschooled. In his final year, he wrote picture books that were recognised locally with a prize for Visual Literacy Book Production. 2013 saw Stevenson’s graduation from the Maryland Institute College of Art. While there, Stevenson rose to renown as a fan artist known as “gingerhaze” for his depictions of the “hipster Lord of the Rings.” In 2013, he also produced the cover art for the book Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

As part of a project for one of his classes during his junior year, he designed the soon-to-be well-known figure Nimona.Midway through 2012, Stevenson started a webcomic centred on the Nimona-named character, and shortly after, she signed with a literary agency who had discovered the webcomic online. In order to publish Nimona as a graphic novel, the agent assisted him in signing with HarperCollins. In 2012, Stevenson’s senior thesis would also be Nimona.

Stevenson earned the 2016 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album: Reprint and the 2012 Cartoonist Studio Prize for Best Web Comic of the Year from Slate Magazine for his work on Nimona. For the graphic novel adaptation of Nimona, Stevenson was also nominated a 2015 National Book Award Finalist. A “writing job in animation” and entry into the animation industry, according to Stevenson, came as a result of his independence in producing comics and his creation of Nimona.

Stevenson worked as an intern at BOOM! Studios, a Los Angeles-based comic book publisher, during the summer of 2012.For Random House, St. Martin’s Press, and Label Magazine, Stevenson provided freelance illustrations. On Ryan North’s 2013 choose-your-own-adventure novel To Be or Not to Be, which is based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, he also collaborated with North.Stevenson played Tova in two episodes of Critical Role’s first season in 2017.

In three additional Critical Role one-shot episodes between 2017 and 2022, he played Peter Pan, Tova, and himself.  In a forthcoming series of Critical Role miniatures from WizKids, his character Tova will make an appearance. The Fire Never Goes Out, a collection of his notebooks and paintings that serves as an autobiography, was released in March 2020. It was described as “a memoir of sorts” in The New Yorker’s review, “a coming-out story, a love story, a tale of disorientingly rapid professional triumph, and a story about mental health and illness, showing the young artist figuring out what [he] must do-first to make art and then to get well.”

Stevenson launched a Substack in October 2021 called “I’m Fine I’m Fine Just Understand” to explore issues like mental health, gender identity, and more. Premium subscribers will have access to comics that “reflect more personal/sensitive topics.”Stevenson published a fan comic for The Book of Boba Fett titled “This Place Was Home” on Twitter on February 4, 2022.In September 2019, Stevenson wed fellow cartoonist Molly Ostertag.

He started working on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power at the same time that he started dating Ostertag,who had a significant impact on the programme “from the very beginning” and  came up with a pivotal plot development for the program’s final season. Stevenson declared that he is “nonbinary, or something like it,” and he uses any personal pronouns in July 2020.

Stevenson released a comic in November 2020 about his top surgery.  Stevenson acknowledged that he is bigender and transmasculine on March 31, 2021, the International Transgender Day of Visibility. Stevenson wrote and illustrated his coming-out story for Oprah Magazine on October 11, 2020, National Coming-Out Day. He discussed his struggle with accepting himself, his “battle against the gender essentialism of [his] Evangelical upbringing,” and how he eventually came to reject religion at the age of 23. Stevenson acknowledged being bipolar in an interview from August 2020.

He spoke about his ADHD in an interview from February 2021 and how it affected his professional and personal life during the COVID-19 pandemic. As reported by CBR, Out Magazine, ComicsBeat, Xtra Magazine, and Bleeding Cool in August 2021, Stevenson changed his first name to ND.

Stevenson declared in October 2021 that he was “getting increasingly aware of the practical necessity for a new, less gendered [name]… at the moment I don’t really feel like I have one.”  Stevenson declared on June 30, 2022, that he had chosen the name Nate, which he had been using in private since 2021, even if he was professionally known as “ND Stevenson.” He also stated that his personal pronouns are he/him. He added that he was okay with the nickname “Indy.”
