Neil Finn Biography and Career:

The reoccurring musical fantasy known as Crowded House is not through with us yet in the year 2021. Today, Neil Finn, who has been the lead vocalist and primary composer for the band from the very beginning, seems to be just as delightfully delighted as fans all around the globe by this turn of events.

And as Finn makes abundantly clear, the much-loved band is not being resurrected and reassembled out of simple sentimentality or in order to gratify an algorithm; rather, it is being resurrected and reassembled on the solid foundation of newly discovered creative energy, familial harmony, and a heartfelt exuberance for all of the new musical possibilities that lie in wait for them.

Crowded House’s celebrated first effort left a lasting musical imprint on our world more than three decades ago. The present version of the band, which is currently writing a new album and getting ready to set out on tour, has some familiar names in this ongoing musical drama. Notably, Neil Finn and Nick Seymour, who were both original members of Crowded House and founding bassists, are still performing with the band today.

Mitchell Froom, who served as the band’s producer and keyboardist for its first three albums, including 1986’s Crowded House, 1988’s Temple of Low Men, and 1991’s Woodface, has recently joined Finn and Seymour in their musical endeavors. Froom is a longtime friend of the pair and a close collaborator. After all of these years, Froom has finally given in and agreed to become Crowded House’s keyboardist.

He will not only play with the band in the recording studio, where he initially assisted in developing the distinctive sound of the band when it was only a trio, but he will also perform live with them while they are on tour.

At the same time, Crowded House has now officially invited two talented younger musicians who have quite literally grown up around this renowned band — Neil’s kids — to join its ranks. Liam Finn, who has previously recorded his own series of critically praised albums beginning in 2007, will be joining the band on guitar and vocals. His younger brother, Elroy Finn, who is a multi-instrumentalist and released his first album under the name simply Elroy in 2019, will be playing drums.

To put it another way, this House has never been more crowded with various friends and family members of Finn, and to hear Finn describe it now, it has seldom been more concentrated than it does right now. According to Finn, “I’ve always been cautious of simply repeating the same formulae, and somehow this seems like a new and true way to re-approach Crowded House today with an understanding of all our history and when, how, and why it originated in the first place.”

The original band’s approach and philosophy are still there, particularly now that Mitchell is back on board and contributing in a new capacity alongside Nick and me. At the same time, it is abundantly evident that Neil Finn values the fresh vitality and skill that have been brought to the gathering by Crowded House’s most recent additions: Liam, who was only two years old when Crowded House started, and his younger brother Elroy.

Neil Finn adds, with a grin on his face, “There’s a lot of film of Liam as a tiny child on the tour bus sitting on Nick’s knee and the two of them painting together.” “And this was also the case not too long after that with Elroy. Even though the band is no longer together, there is still a strong feeling of continuity and connection among the members.

However, Liam and Elroy are in the band because they have both developed into really talented musicians in their own right, and the evidence is already evident in the songs that we are producing,” adds Finn.

This musical synergy was dramatically shown when Crowded House went in to practice at Valentine Studio in Los Angeles before recording in United Studios and ended up capturing about half of the album without knowing it.

According to Finn, the early results of their recording have been fantastic. “What we are all creating together has some familiarity for Crowded House fans, and also some new perspectives to explore,” adds Finn. “From what I’ve seen, it seems like there is a lot of room for this band to develop and flourish.” Finn admits that his restless creative spirit is a contributing factor to his having what he terms “a problematic relationship with Crowded House —one that’s even prompted breakups, more or less.”

In point of fact, during the many years of success and failure that have passed, Crowded House has only sometimes seemed to be an idea that is completely closed. Crowded House had a great deal of success with their album Woodface when Finn’s elder brother and former bandmate in Split Enz, Tim Finn, was a member of the band for a while.

Then, after the band split up in 1996, Finn continued to work and collaborate outside of Crowded House — on solo albums such as 1998’s Try Whistling This, 2001’s One Nil, 2017’s Out of Silence which Neil co-produced with Liam, as well as even more collaborative efforts like 7 Worlds Collide, the acclaimed live album Finn recorded with a spontaneous supergroup including Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr, and Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway Other important collaborations include a live album released in 2013 with Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly and an album released in 2018 called Lightsleeper, which was a collaboration between Neil and Liam and also contained contributions from Sharon, Neil’s wife, and Elroy.

Speaking of close collaborators, Neil and Sharon founded their own pair Pajama Club when they were faced with the prospect of an empty nest, also known as their own home being momentarily less congested.

But once the dynamic drummer for Crowded House, Paul Hester, passed away in 2005, it seemed as if all possibility of a future for Crowded House had been eliminated forever. “Paul was a phenomenal performer who added a tremendous lot of enthusiasm to what we did,” adds Finn. “He was a significant part of our success.”

You wanted to see everyone on stage, as is the case with the majority of excellent bands. Yes, you may adore the music and the lyrics, but you were always struck by the small aside Paul would give — or the strong vibe Nick gave to it.

However, Finn once again surprised everyone by making the unpopular choice to rejoin Crowded House in recording and performing activities. Now, Finn adds, “There were lots of reasons why it seemed right when we got back together after we lost Paul.” “For me, it felt right when we got back together after we lost Paul,” Finn says.

“Basically, I simply did not want to leave us there with a huge full stop because I believe that Paul, Nick, and I built something really wonderful in this world together, and maybe there was more that we could still do,” she said. And so it came to be that Finn and Seymour, together with the assistance of drummer Matt Sherrod, were able to create two new Crowded House albums, namely Time On Earth (2007) and Intriguer (2010).

Remarkably, it was Neil Finn’s unexpected inclusion in the most current lineup of rock titans Fleetwood Mac in 2018 that finally helped inspire Finn’s desire to resuscitate his own iconic band in a fresh manner. This remarkable turn of events took place almost another decade later in 2018. “I still believe in the notion of bands,” Finn says in the explanation.

And because I found myself within a historic band like Fleetwood Mac full of interesting personalities, it got me wondering about the members of my own band. The audience seemed to like it very much when I sang “Don’t Dream It’s Over” during the Fleetwood Mac concert.

During my time with Split Enz, we attempted to cover their song “I Got You,” but it did not turn out as well. On the other hand, the event made me reflect. And in the end, after the last Fleetwood Mac gig, I went straight into practice with Crowded House the very next day, just to see how things would go. It became instantly apparent that we were producing a pretty fantastic sound while we were playing together. Even the CDs of our rehearsals had a great spirit to them.”
