New Orleans Pelicans Biography and Career:

In the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association, the New Orleans Pelicans are a professional basketball team based in New Orleans. The Pelicans are a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The Hornets were the initial name for the Pelicans, who were created in 1988 and were originally based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Muggsy Bogues, a quick-footed 5-foot-3-inch (1.60-metre) point guard, and sharpshooter Dell Curry were among the early clubs’ star players, but, like other expansion teams, they struggled to win many games.

During the 1992–93 season, the club selected forward Larry Johnson in the first round and center Alonzo Mourning in the second round. The duo guided the Hornets to their first playoffs participation (and postseason series victory) in franchise history. Following that, the Hornets qualified for the playoffs three more times in the 1990s but failed to move beyond the second round each time.

The Charlotte Hornets started a streak of five straight playoff berths in 1999–2000 with the help of guard Baron Davis’s outstanding performance. However, the Hornets were unable to go farther than one series victory in any of those seasons.

Game attendance for the Hornets was among the lowest in the league, despite their on-court success. As a result of George Shinn’s personal unpopularity as a team owner after his sexual assault charges and subsequent national television civil trial, a new, more lucrative, publically financed arena was sought (he was acquitted). Shinn relocated the club to New Orleans in 2002 after his final attempt to build a new arena in Charlotte was rejected by the city’s residents.

The Hornets were forced to move to Oklahoma City for the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons after Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to their home arena. The Hornets had only been in New Orleans for three seasons before they were forced to transfer.

While in New Orleans for the 2007–08 season, the club compiled a surprise 56–26 record, winning the division championship for the first time in the franchise’s history. The Saints were coming off of two straight fourth-place finishes at the time of their return.

The Hornets, led by rising star point guard Chris Paul and forward David West, proceeded to the conference semifinals that season, only to fall in seven games to the eventual champions. Following the continuation of Shinn’s financial woes, he was forced to sell the club in 2010.

However, since no credible buyer could be identified, the NBA purchased the franchise. Eventually, the Hornets were sold to Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, in 2012. In 2011, the Hornets acquired Paul from the Clippers in a trade. In an effort to strengthen links with their hometown, the Hornets (whose moniker was a reference to the “hornet’s nest” of American rebels in Charlotte during the American Revolution) changed their name to the Pelicans in 2013 from the Hornets.

A huge stride forward in terms of on-court success was taken by New Orleans when it won the 2012 NBA draught lottery and picked forward-center Anthony Davis with their first overall pick in the following year’s draught. When Davis arrived, he took the league by storm and guided the club back to the postseason in the 2014–15 season.

After being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, the Pelicans suffered through an injury-plagued 2015–16 season, finishing with a 30–52 record. With a 48-game winning streak in 2017–18, the Pelicans qualified for the postseason, where they won their first postseason series since the Davis era before being defeated in the second round.

While playing for the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2018–19 season, Davis expressed dissatisfaction with the organization, claiming the organization has failed to develop a consistent winner around him during his career. The transaction, on the other hand, never came to fruition, and the Pelicans’ on-court performance suffered as a result, as they concluded the season with a 33–49 record.
