New Orleans Saints Biography and Career:

The New Orleans Saints are an American professional gridiron football club headquartered in New Orleans that competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League. The Saints are a member of the NFL’s National Football Conference (NFC). The Saints have only won one Super Bowl title in their history (2010).

It was as an expansion franchise that the Saints first took the field in 1967. The Saints suffered in their inaugural season in the NFL, losing 11 of their 14 games, which was the same as the majority of expansion clubs. The futility of the team’s efforts, on the other hand, was especially apparent, since it took them 20 years to produce their first winning season.

As a result of the team’s protracted ineffectiveness, their supporters gave them the somewhat endearing moniker “the ‘Aints” throughout those early decades. The Saints had two notable players during that time period: Archie Manning, who was the team’s quarterback from 1971 to midway through the 1982 season and was one of its most popular players in franchise history; and Tom Dempsey, who kicked an NFL record (tied in 1998) 63-yard game-winning field goal in 1970 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

When the team’s supporters embraced a long-standing cry that had been used at local high school and university football games, it was a watershed moment. Members of the franchise’s fan base began to refer to the franchise as “Who Dat” as a slang word.

After a high-scoring offense led by quarterback Bobby Hebert and a solid defense featuring linebackers, Rickey Jackson and Sam Mills combined to power the Saints to a 12–3 record and a playoff appearance in 1987, the franchise had its first winning season. The Saints, on the other hand, suffered a humiliating loss to the Minnesota Vikings in their inaugural playoff game.

New Orleans had winning records in both 1988 and 1989 but failed to qualify for the playoffs in either season. In 1990, the club started a run of three straight seasons in which they qualified for the playoffs but lost in the first round of the tournament. Morten Andersen, the club’s placekicker during the 1982–94 season, emerged as an unexpected star of the postseason. During his 13 seasons with the team (1982–94), Andersen was chosen to six Pro Bowls and went on to break the NFL record for most career points scored.

From 1996 through 1999, the Saints were mired in mediocrity, losing at least ten games in each of the seasons during that span. The Saints, on the other hand, had a surprise turnaround in 2000, winning 10 games to qualify for the playoffs and upsetting the defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams in the process for the franchise’s first playoff triumph. After that, the Saints were unable to reach the playoffs for the next five seasons.

This was made possible by Hurricane Katrina, which forced the Saints to play all of their 2005 “home” games away from the Superdome. However, the Saints returned to the Superdome in 2006 and posted a 10–6 record under first-year head coach Sean Payton, marking the team’s first appearance in the postseason since 1997. In the wake of the previous season’s struggle, the Saints gained national attention with a dynamic offense led by quarterback Drew Brees. The Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs on their way to their first NFC title game, where they were defeated by the Chicago Bears.

In 2009, the Saints won their first 13 games of the season and finished as the top-seeded club in the NFC, qualifying them for the postseason. As part of their playoff run, they beat both the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings on route to their first Super Bowl appearance, which they won against the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

The Saints won 11 games the next season but were stunned in the first round of the playoffs by a Seattle Seahawks team that finished with seven victories. However, despite having the NFL’s top-ranked offense for the fourth consecutive season, they were eliminated from the playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

The NFL reported in March 2012 that it had uncovered that the Saints’ coaching staff had run a bounty scheme between 2009 and 2011 in which cash prizes were given to defensive players who hurt their opponents. The bounty program was in place from 2009 and 2011. Former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was banned indefinitely, while general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight games as a result of their involvement in the scheme.

Apart from those unusual personnel punishments, the club was fined $500,000 and deprived of two second-round draught selections, which was a first in the league. In the wake of that turbulent off-season, the Saints struggled to a 7–9 record in 2012, but they rallied the next season under Payton’s leadership, winning 11 games and earning a playoff spot in 2013. While the Saints’ offense remained one of the best in the NFL for the next two seasons, their defense deteriorated to the point that it was one of the worst in the league, and the club compiled three straight 7–9 records from 2014 to 2016.

The Saints were able to break out of their rut in 2017 thanks to an amazing collection of rookies, who helped the club win 11 games and the division championship. A 61-yard game-winning touchdown by the Minnesota Vikings with less than a second left to play in the clubs’ divisional-round clash sent the Saints out of the playoffs in a sad manner.

After improving their regular-season performance in 2018, the Saints went undefeated in the postseason, winning 13 games to earn the top seed in the NFC. A botched penalty call in the last two minutes of ordinary time prevented the Saints from winning the NFC championship game in regulation time, and the club went on to lose the game in overtime.

The team’s playoff journey, however, ended in disappointment once again. However, since New Orleans was unable to secure a postseason bye because it lost tiebreakers to the other two NFC teams with the same record, it was forced to play in the NFC playoffs’ first round, when it was defeated by Minnesota in a rematch of the NFC Championship Game.
