Norm Macdonald Biography and Career:

The Canadian stand-up comic Norman Gene “Norm” MacDonald was recognized for his deadpan humor and lyrical approach, which helped make him one of the most well-known characters to have been on Saturday Night Live. He went by the stage name “Norm.” Comedy Central ranked him as one of the top 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time on their list. In the beginning of his career, he was a stand-up comedian who performed in clubs. Eventually, he was given the opportunity to play at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. He relocated to Los Angeles after coming to the conclusion that he required a larger platform in order to achieve the level of success in his career that he had always imagined.

Soon after, he started appearing on series like The Drew Carey Show and NewsRadio in addition to writing for the comedy Roseanne. When he was cast on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) as a writer and cast member, he got his big break in the entertainment industry. Through his hilarious impressions of celebrities such as Larry King, David Letterman, Burt Reynolds, and Bob Dole, amongst others, he rose to the top of the popularity charts. The fact that he was given the chance to host the program “Weekend Update” was a major turning point in his professional life. During this period, he rose to fame as a result of his caustic, sometimes bitingly sarcastic remarks and insults.

As a result of his comments and insults, he was adored and despised in equal measure by his supporters and critics. MacDonald spent his childhood in the Canadian capital of Ottawa. During World War II, his father was a member of the Canadian Army and fought overseas.  He was the younger of two brothers. After making his debut in the world of stand-up comedy in Ottawa bars, he quickly expanded his act to include appearances in other cities throughout Canada. It was in 1987 that he was given the opportunity to do a performance at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. After coming to the conclusion that he needed to be more visible in order to further his profession, he decided to go to Los Angeles in order to test his luck in the entertainment industry there.

There, he was able to get a position as a writer on the television show Roseanne. In 1993, he became a writer and a cast member for the television show Saturday Night Live (SNL), which was broadcast on NBC. There, he gave hilarious impressions of a number of well-known people, including Larry King, David Letterman, and Burt Reynolds, which had the crowd rolling on the floor with laughter. After the previous host, Kevin Nealon, left Saturday Night Live, he was given the opportunity to take over the hosting duties for the satirical news segment known as “Weekend Update.” As a news presenter, he often made allusions to controversial subjects, such as rapes in jail and crack prostitutes. He was notorious for making caustic comments about famous people like Michael Jackson and Marion Barry.

Late in 1997, he was let go from his position as the host of the Saturday Night Live segment known as “Weekend Update.” The ostensible reason for his dismissal was that MacDonald was “not humorous.” On the other hand, there is a widespread consensus that the fact that he was dismissed was the consequence of certain tensions that had been building up between him and the management. The year 1998 marked the end of his run of performances on Saturday Night Live. He made an appearance on a made-up TV program called “Who’s More Grizzled?” and posed questions to the host and the guest, who were portrayed by Garth Brooks and Robert Duvall, respectively. He also performed the role of the show’s host.

After being dismissed from his position at Saturday Night Live, he went on to act in the 1998 comedy picture “Dirty Work.” The story centered on a group of close friends who establish a company that provides “vengeance for hire.” Despite receiving poor reviews, the movie went on to become a beloved piece of pop culture. In the remade version of “Dr. Dolittle” starring Eddie Murphy, he provided the voice for the role of Lucky the dog in the year 1998. In the sequels “Dr. Dolittle 2” (2001) and “Dr. Dolittle 3,” he played the title character once again (2006). In the comedy ‘The Norm Show,’ which aired on the ABC network from 1999 to 2001, he portrayed the role of Norm Henderson. The life of a former National Hockey League hockey player who faces a lifetime suspension from the league due to gambling and tax fraud was the center of the episode. In November of 2000, he participated in the celebrity edition of the game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and won $500,000 for Paul Newman’s Charity Camp as a result of his performance.

In 2003, he had an appearance in the comedy ‘A Minute with Stan Hooper’ playing the role of Stan Hooper.  In the show, he portrayed the role of the’straight guy’ amid a cast of colorful characters. However, due to the show’s lack of popularity, it was decided to end production after just one season. In “The Fairly Odd Parents” (2004-2005), he provided the voice of Norm the Genie. In “Farce of the Penguins” (2006), he provided the voice of Join Twosomes Penguin. In “Christmas is Here Again” (2007), he provided the voice of “Buster the Fox.” During the years 2009 and 2010, he appeared on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” on many occasions as a guest.
