Novak Djokovic Biography and Career:

Djokovic is a Serbian tennis player who was one of the sport’s top performers in the early twenty-first century. He was born on May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia [now in Serbia] and raised in Belgrade. He set a record by winning nine Australian Open titles, and he became just the third player (after Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal) to win 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles in his career.

Djokovic began playing tennis at the age of four and swiftly rose through the junior levels. After overcoming the difficulties of growing up in war-torn Serbia throughout the 1990s, he rose to become Europe’s top-ranked 14-and-under player and then the continent’s top-ranked 16-and-under player before going professional in 2003. Djokovic reached the top 100 of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings when he was 18 years old, and he won his first ATP tournament in July 2006.

After reaching the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2007, he advanced to the finals of the U.S. Open the following year, where he was defeated by Roger Federer in straight sets in the final. After winning the Australian Open in 2007, Djokovic extended his hot form into 2008, becoming the first Serbian man to win one of tennis’s four most famous singles tournaments, and became the first Serbian man to win a Grand Slam title. Later the same year, he competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where he won a bronze medal.

In the almost three years from February 2008 and the end of 2010, Djokovic’s career was stagnant, as he won just ten ATP men’s singles titles and advanced to only one Grand Slam final (the 2010 United States Open) in the meantime. It was in December 2010 that his fortunes began to flip when he captained the Serbian Davis Cup team to the country’s maiden Davis Cup victory. In January 2011, he won his second Australian Open championship, capping off a 43-match winning run that ranked third all-time in the Open era (since 1968).

His Davis Cup victory marked the start of the third-longest winning streak in the Open era (since 1968). Djokovic’s incredible run came to an end with a loss to Federer in the French Open semifinals, but his consistent performance enabled him to ascend to the top of the global rankings soon after defeating Rafael Nadal to win the 2011 Wimbledon title. Djokovic went on to upset Rafael Nadal in the final of the U.S. Open, claiming his third Grand Slam championship of the year.

The following year, at the Australian Open, he defeated Nadal once again, this time in a five-set thriller that lasted over six hours. The two played in the 2012 French Open final when Djokovic was defeated by Nadal in four sets. It was Djokovic’s fourth straight Grand Slam final appearance. In 2013, Djokovic overcame Andy Murray to earn his fourth Australian Open title, and he added another Wimbledon trophy the following year when he upset Roger Federer in a thrilling five-set final at the All England Club in London.

In 2015, he defeated Andy Murray to win his fifth career Australian Open title, establishing him as the all-time leader in men’s singles titles at the Australian Open during the Open era of tennis. Having suffered a defeat in the 2015 French Open final, the world number one Djokovic defeated Federer to capture his third Wimbledon title.

It was a continuation of his hot form at the U.S. Open, as he defeated Federer in the final to win the 10th Grand Slam championship of his career. When he defeated Murray in straight sets in the final of the 2016 Australian Open, Djokovic extended his Grand Slam-winning run to 21 matches. In the 2016 French Open final, he defeated Murray for the second time in a Grand Slam final. Djokovic completed a career in Grand Slam by winning his maiden French Open title and became the first Serbian to do so.

Djokovic advanced to the finals of the 2016 U.S. Open, however, he was defeated by Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in a four-set battle. As a result of failing to move beyond the quarterfinals in the first three Grand Slam events of 2017, he declared in July that he would withdraw from the rest of the year’s tournaments in order to recover from an elbow ailment that had bothered him for the previous 18 months. In January 2018, he returned to the field of play. Djokovic steadily improved during the year, and he won the fourth Wimbledon championship of his professional career in July.

Only two months later, he won his third consecutive US Open singles title in New York. In January 2019, Djokovic won his seventh career Australian Open singles championship, tying him with Roger Federer for the most in the tournament’s history. He then successfully defended his Wimbledon title in dramatic fashion, defeating Federer in a four-hour and 57-minute final (the longest singles final in tournament history), which was decided in an unprecedented tiebreaker after the fifth set ended in a 12–12 tie. He was the first man to win Wimbledon in four years.
