Oklahoma City Thunder Biography and Career:
An American professional basketball club located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City Thunder competes in the Western Conference of the NBA (NBA). Throughout 41 years the team was headquartered in Seattle, and during that time it won three conference championships (1978, 1979, 1996) as well as the NBA championship in 1979. In 2012, the Oklahoma City Thunder won the Western Conference.
The first major North American sports club in the Pacific Northwest, the SuperSonics (called after Seattle’s aerospace sector and abbreviated to “the Sonics”) were established as an NBA expansion team in 1967. Lenny Wilkens, Fred “Downtown Freddie” Brown, and Spencer Haywood, the first player to enter the NBA after winning a key Supreme Court lawsuit that permitted him to join the Sonics before he was four years out of high school, were all part of the early squads.
The Sonics didn’t make the playoffs until the 1974–75 season when they finished 43–39 and beat the Detroit Pistons in a three-game first-round playoff series under second-year head coach Bill Russell’s leadership. As of February 23, 1978, Wilkens was back in charge of Seattle as the team’s head coach.
He guided the Sonics to a fourth-place finish in the league with a club that was 5–17 when he was hired. They beat Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers before losing in the NBA finals against Washington Bullets after seven games in the tournament. Sonics players Gus Williams and Dennis Johnson staged a five-game comeback to win their first NBA title with the club in the next season’s finals rematch, which they won in five games.
Once again, Seattle made it to the finals of the Conference Finals in 1979–80 but was beaten by a Lakers squad that included Magic Johnson as a rookie. The Sonics qualified for the playoffs on a regular basis throughout the 1980s, with one remarkable run in 1986–87.
On their way to losing in the Western Conference finals, the Sonics had a 39–43 record, which was good for seventh place in the conference. However, they were able to defeat the higher-seeded Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs.
Midway through the 1991–92 season, George Karl was named head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, taking over a club that included stars Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp at point guard and power forward, respectively. It took the SuperSonics only seven games to beat the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference finals in Karl Maloney’s first season as head coach (1992–93).
The next season saw the Sonics earn the best regular-season record in the NBA, only to fall to an eighth-seeded club in the first round of the playoffs (the Denver Nuggets). The Sonics’ 64–18 record in 1995–96 was the greatest in the Western Conference and the 10th best in NBA history at the time. The SuperSonics won their first three playoff series to go to the NBA finals, where they were met by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls (the NBA’s best record at the time, 72–10), who beat Seattle in a six-game series.
In 1998, Karl was dismissed after the Sonics lost in the second round of the playoffs for the second time in a row after winning the division. After that, the Seahawks went through a rebuilding phase during which they only made the playoffs twice in six seasons, both times as the seventh seed.
Nate McMillan, who played with the Sonics from 1986 to 1998 and was called “Mr. Sonic” by teammates Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, led the Sonics to a division championship and a conference semifinal berth in 2004–05. The Sonics went on to win the conference championship.
The selling of the Sonics to a group of Oklahoma-based investors and the state and local governments’ refusals to pay for a publicly financed arena—which eventually led to the franchise’s transfer to Oklahoma City in 2008—took place during the team’s early 2000s struggles. Before making this decision, a lawsuit initiated by Seattle had been settled, which resulted in it being granted full ownership and control of any future NBA franchises that may be established in the city.
Thunder forward Kevin Durant and guard Russell Westbrook led a fast rebuilding effort, which resulted in a playoff appearance in their second season in the city of Oklahoma. Both in 2010–11 and in 2013–14, Oklahoma City made it all the way to the NBA finals thanks to the team’s quick rise.

Last year, they returned to the conference finals where they were up 3-1 against the Golden State Warriors (who had won an NBA-record 73 games during the regular season) before falling to the Warriors in seven games in the championship round. Westbrook took over as the Thunder’s primary player after Durant’s departure to join the Golden State Warriors in the following season.
For all of his record-setting achievements in 2016–17, the team couldn’t support him, and their season ended in a first-round playoff exit since they didn’t have enough strong supporting cast members. When Paul George joined the squad for this season’s playoffs, Westbrook averaged another triple-double, but the Thunder were unable to progress beyond the first round for a second consecutive year. It was a disappointing season for the Thunder, even with Westbrook averaging a triple-double for the third time in a row and George emerging as one of the NBA’s top players in 2018-19.
