He got his start in the music industry by writing songs and posting them on the do-it-yourself streaming site SoundCloud. During this period, he was working at Guitar Center and Jimmy John’s, and he was also living in an attic. In 2017, he posted his song “Ugotme” on Spotify using $30 that he borrowed from a friend. The song was quickly playlisted on the platform’s Fresh Finds and racked up 20,000 listens in a single day. After another year, the song would eventually accumulate more than 15 million streams. In 2018, he came out with his first extended play titled “Stereo,” which was also very highly appreciated.

He embarked on the “Want Tour” in 2018 and the “Voyager Tour” in 2019, both of which took place in 2018 and 2019. In April 2019, he released his second extended play (EP), titled Friends, when he was on the “Voyager Tour.” Aside from performing at Lollapalooza in August of 2019, he also embarked on his very first tour of Europe 2019. Late in 2019, Apollo discharged the songs “Fro” and “Hit Me Up,” both of which included Kenny Beats as a collaborator in the production department. Apollo released the song “Imagine U” in April 2020, which was another collaboration with Kenny Beats.

On August 7, 2020, he released the track “Stay back,” which served as the first single off his debut studio album. The second song, titled “Kamikaze,” was released by him on September 10th. Apollo made his debut on the tune “High Hopes” of Japanese-Australian alternative R&B artist Joji’s second studio album titled Nectar, which was released on September 25. Before the release of his first studio album, Apolonio, on October 16, Apollo released the singles “Dos Uno Nueve (219)” and “Want U Around .”

While he was growing up, he enjoyed listening to music from some of his parents’ all-time favorite artists, including Pedro Infante, Los Panchos, and The Beatles. His musical tastes are influenced by a wide range of artists, including Neil Young, John Mayer, Prince, Bootsy Collins, and The Internet, among others.

When he was 12 years old, his parents gave him a guitar as a present; however, it was an electric guitar that did not come with an amplifier. He then went to a pawn shop and exchanged it for an acoustic guitar, which he finally learned to play by watching cover songs on YouTube and trying to play along with them. It took him a few years to buy a new guitar and get back into playing after the one he had gotten stolen when he was 15 years old was a more recent model that he had purchased later on. After getting feedback on the quality of his voice from his father and others, he eventually turned to YouTube to teach himself how to sing.

Omar enrolled in Indiana University Northwest; however, he left after just two weeks because he had the impression that there was something else he was meant to be doing and wanted to concentrate on music instead. Apollo, who was born Omar Velasco, spent his adolescence skating and his parents gave him his first guitar when he was 12 years old. Apollo was raised in Hobart, Indiana, where he was born. Early teaching on the instrument came from a Mexican uncle who was visiting from that country, and I also watched a constant diet of instructional videos on YouTube. By the time Apollo was a senior in high school, he was already producing his own music on his laptop at home.

After dropping out of college in 2015, he decided to focus all of his energy on his musical career, getting inspiration from a wide variety of artists such as David Bowie, D’Angelo, Cuco Sánchez, and many more. He is now a full-time musician. He started out by uploading tunes to the internet, some of which, including “[]” and “Brakelights,” was quite popular. He took heart from the positive feedback and began scheduling gigs, performing in cities such as Bloomington, Indianapolis, and Chicago. His first extended play, titled Stereo, was published in 2018, and it had songs performed in both English and Spanish. Both “Rome” and “Erase” were released as singles prior to the album’s release.

The next year saw the release of a second extended play titled Friends, as well as a collaboration track titled “Hit Me Up” featuring Dominic Fike and Kenny Beats. The bright and cheery “Imagine U” was Apollo’s first release of the year 2020. Later in the same year, he released the singles “Stay back” and “Kamikaze,” both of which were included on his first full-length album, titled Apolonio. Because of his work on the song “Te Olvidaste” with the Spanish singer C. Tangana, he was nominated for two Latin Grammys in 2021: Record of the Year and Best Alternative Song. Both of these awards went to other artists. IVORY was Apollo’s second full-length album, and it was released in April 2022. Daniel Caesar and Kali Uchis both made cameos on the album as special guests.

After doing some study on his available choices, he came to the conclusion that an acoustic guitar would best suit his needs. They “went to the pawn store, swapped [the electric guitar] in, [and] received a $40 acoustic one,” according to Velasco’s account of the events. After that, I just went on YouTube, where I “would see others upload covers, and I would attempt to replicate their fingers, just to understand what it was [that they were doing].” He explains. It consisted of cover songs by Camp Rock. I was maybe 12 years old, man!” he chuckles.

“I deadass was on that because I ain’t know nothing else but TV — we had a radio but I ain’t have no Wi-Fi or anything else yet, so it was just what was on the TV,” the speaker said. “I ain’t have no Wi-Fi or anything else yet, so it was just what was on the TV.” The fortunate outcome was that Velasco’s skill was bolstered by a relative who was in town. “My Great Uncle Augustine was able to play three chords on the guitar… A, and the key of E minor I can very vividly recall falling asleep while playing it. After playing those three chords, Velasco continued to challenge himself by carrying his guitar about with him wherever he went, even in the vehicle that belonged to his mother.

During his junior and senior years, Velasco spent his days working at the McDonald’s near his home and his nights putting in substantial time on SoundCloud deep dives. Velasco remembers a period of intense creativity during which he discovered musicians such as The Internet, Daniel Caesar, and Smino. “I discovered all of this stuff and then I was like, ‘Damn, I was really fire at guitar when I was younger; I should just go get another one,’ so I went to the pawn store [and] purchased a tiny $50 joint,”. he was able to save up enough money to purchase a laptop that he would use to create beats because he managed to command the register and break down boxes in the back of the restaurant.

After getting his feet wet with producing on Logic Pro, Velasco became dedicated to teaching himself how to sing. While in history class, he would show classmates snippets of reference recordings. The very first one of Omar Apollo’s songs to be published on the internet was over a “Chance The Rapper like the beat” that he downloaded from YouTube. This is music that he assures us we will never hear.
