Ozzie Smith Biography and Career:

Osborne Earl Smith is a name that was once familiar to fans of professional baseball in the United States. On December 26, 1954, Smith entered this world. Smith was given the nickname “the Wizard of Oz” due to the fact that he had a streak of 13 consecutive seasons in which he won the National League Gold Glove Award for defensive play at shortstop.

Smith spent his time in Major League Baseball with the San Diego Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals playing shortstop for both of those teams. It was noted how outstanding he was defensive while playing shortstop, and he received praise for this. During the course of his career, Smith was chosen to participate in the All-Star game 15 times. After his career was over, he had a total of 2,460 hits, and 580 stolen bases, and was awarded the National League Silver Slugger Award in 1987 for being the league’s best shortstop hitter.

The year 2002 marked his first year of eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame, and it was in that year that he was chosen for induction. In addition to this, the St. Louis Cardinals chose him to be a part of the inaugural class of players to be inducted into their Hall of Fame in the year 2014. Smith moved to the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles with his family when he was six years old.

Smith was born in Mobile, Alabama, but his family moved there when he was a young child. As a child, Smith was active in a variety of sports, which contributed to the development of his lightning-fast reflexes. After graduating from Locke High School in Los Angeles, he continued his baseball career at California Polytechnic State University, which is located in San Luis Obispo.

1978 was the first year that Smith played in the major leagues. That was also the year that the Padres picked him in the amateur draught. Later on, he became well-known for the spectacular backflips that he would do while taking his position at the beginning of a game on special occasions. Very quickly, he distinguished himself as an exceptional fielder in the game. In 1980, Smith was presented with his first Gold Glove Award, and in 1981, he appeared in his first MLB All-Star Game. Both of these accomplishments came in the same year.

Whitey Herzog, the manager of the Cardinals, pursued Smith after Smith’s relationship with the ownership of the Padres deteriorated to the point where it became hostile. Herzog flew to San Diego in an effort to persuade Smith that he would be appreciated, valuable, and a core component of the Cardinals, and to persuade Smith to waive the “no-trade clause” in his contract so that he could be traded and join the Cardinals.

Smith’s current contract contains the “no-trade clause.” After some time, Smith came around and agreed to be traded, after which he joined the Cardinals. Herzog was successful in gaining Smith’s cooperation through his overture. Because Smith was willing to waive the “no-trade” clause in his contract, the Cardinals were able to acquire him in exchange for shortstop Garry Templeton in 1982. Smith was traded to the Cardinals at that time.

After signing with the Cardinals, Smith quickly became an indispensable member of the team’s 1982 championship run in the World Series. Three years later, his game-winning home run during Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series prompted broadcaster Jack Buck’s “Go crazy, folks!” play-by-play call. Smith posted career highs in several offensive categories during the 1987 season, despite the fact that he had suffered an injury to his rotator cuff during the 1985 season.

Up until the year 1993, Smith was an outstanding defensive player who deserved to win the Gold Glove award and be selected for the All-Star game. During the 1995 season, Smith had surgery on his shoulder, which caused him to miss nearly three months of action. As a result of this, Smith was eliminated from contention.

Ozzie Smith made the decision to hang up his cleats and retire at the end of the 1996 season after developing a rift with his new manager Tony La Russa. La Russa had replaced Ozzie Smith. Smith was honored by the St. Louis Cardinals by having the number one uniform number that he wore retired. Smith served as the host of the television show This Week in Baseball, which was centered on baseball, during the years 1997 and 1998.
