In July of 2020, Rothfuss’s editor and publisher, Betsy Wollheim, responded publicly on her Facebook account to an article that speculated on reasons why the concluding volume of the trilogy, The Doors of Stone, had not been published. In her response, she stated that she had “never seen a word of book three” and that she did not believe Rothfuss had written anything since 2014. The post has been removed since it was made.

In December of 2021, Rothfuss formed a partnership with Grim Oak Press to establish a new publishing label known as Underthing Press. Ursula Vernon’s webcomic Digger, which was published online and received the Hugo Award in 2012, will be reprinted as the first project of the new label. Rothfuss noted that he’d always daydreamed of creating his own imprint, and he decided to launch Underthing Press after he learned he couldn’t purchase a new edition of Digger Omnibus after donating his book to a friend. Rothfuss stated that he’d always daydreamed of starting his own imprint.

Rothfuss tweeted in December 2021 that he would ” write a complete chapter of Doors of Stone” if the charitable organization he was supporting met the financial target of $333,333. The target was met “unbelievably rapidly by people clamoring for more Kingkiller material,” however as of September 2022, there has been no new chapter published.
