Patrick Soon-Shiong Biography and Career:

Patrick Soon-Shiong is a South African-American transplant surgeon, bioscientist, billionaire businessman, and owner of more than one media outlet. On July 29, 1952, he was born. He made the drug called Abraxane, which became famous for how well it worked against lung, breast, and pancreas cancers. Soon-Shiong started NantWorks, which is a group of startups in healthcare, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. Soon-Shiong joined the UCLA Medical School’s faculty in 1983 as a transplant surgeon and stayed there until 1991.

He was an associate investigator at the Center for Ulcer Research and Education from 1984 to 1987. Soon-Shiong was the first person at UCLA to do a transplant of a whole pancreas. He was also the first person to come up with and do an encapsulated-human-islet transplant, which is an experimental treatment for type 1 diabetes.
