Patty Murray Biography and Career:
Bothell, Washington, United States Patricia Lynn Murray (née Johns; born October 11, 1950) is an American politician and former educator who has served in the United States Senate since 1993, and as the senior Senator since 2001. Murray was the youngest of seven children born to David L. Johns and Beverly A. McLaughlin in Bothell, Washington. Her mother was a bookkeeper. Her father was a Purple Heart recipient during World War II. Welsh, Irish, Scottish, and French-Canadian ancestors are among her relatives. Her family was obliged to ask for social help when her father became handicapped due to multiple sclerosis while she was a teenager. He had previously worked as the manager of a five-and-dime business. Murray was a student at Saint Brendan Catholic School when he was younger.
Murray graduated from Washington State University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1972. For several years, she worked as a preschool teacher, and from 1984 to 1987, she taught a parenting programme at Shoreline Community College.
Patty served as the first female Chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee during the 112th Congress and the first female Chair of the Senate Budget Committee during the 113th Congress, in addition to being the first female Senator from Washington state. She now serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
Patty grew up in the city of Bothell, Washington. Her father owned and operated a five-and-dime store on Main Street, where she and her siblings all worked as children. When her father became ill when she was 15, she soon learnt the value of a strong work ethic and a country that supports those who fall on hard times as a twin and one of seven children. Patty’s father, a Purple Heart recipient and World War II veteran, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and within a few years, his sickness had progressed to the point where he couldn’t work. Patty’s mother, who had stayed at home to raise their children, had to care for him while simultaneously working to support them. She found work, but it wasn’t enough to support Patty, her six siblings and sisters, and a husband who was facing mounting medical problems. They were fortunate to live in a country where the government did not just say, “Tough luck.”
Patty’s family received some assistance from the VA for their father’s medical care, but her family had to rely on food stamps for several months. Patty’s mother, on the other hand, was able to return to school in order to obtain a better earning job thanks to a federally funded programme. Patty and her siblings were all able to attend college thanks to federal subsidies and student loans. Patty interned at the Seattle Veterans Administration’s psychiatric ward while attending Washington State University. She saw firsthand the sacrifices made by young Vietnam War veterans there.
When she went to Olympia as a parent to fight for a local preschool programme threatened by state budget cuts in the 1980s, a state lawmaker told her she “couldn’t make a difference.” Patty responded by forming a grassroots group of 13,000 parents who successfully battled to keep the programme alive. Patty later became a member of the Shoreline School Board and was elected to the Washington State Senate in 1988. She ran for the US Senate in 1992 as a voice for Washington families that were being ignored. Patty managed a grassroots campaign of family, friends, allies, and public interest groups to defeat a 10-year veteran of the United States House of Representatives, despite being dramatically outspent. In 1998, 2004, and 2010, Patty was re-elected.
