Pen Farthing Biography and Career:

Pen Farthing, the founder of a charity organization that helps troops get the stray dogs and cats they took in while serving overseas reunited with their families. According to what Farthing had to say, “there is no deeper tie between man and dog than that created during the war.”

In the year 2006, when Farthing assisted a Royal Marine sergeant in Nowzad, Afghanistan, in breaking up a dogfight, the sergeant didn’t give it much thought. The town had been decimated by the war, and it was infested by dogs. However, when one of those dogs accompanied Farthing back to base, it became difficult to determine who had been saved by whom.

Nowzad was the name that Farthing gave to his new friend, and the following year, as a result of the difficulty that he had in bringing Nowzad back to England with him, Farthing established Nowzad Dogs in order to assist other soldiers whose lives were improved by the animals that they befriended in war-torn towns.

To this day, Nowzad Dogs has been successful in reuniting approximately 700 service members with the animals that they took in while serving in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Edwin Caba is a member of the military who was involved with Farthing’s group. On the military facility in Afghanistan where Caba is stationed, a litter of pups was just born, and the troops have been taking care of them by feeding, bathing, socializing, and bonding with them. One puppy, in particular, a female he called Cadence, became very close to Caba.

However, when Caba, an American, had to finish his term of duty, he was devastated to learn that he would have to leave Cadence behind. Through Farthing’s charitable organization, Caba and his fellow service members were able to see the pups again in New York the previous year.

“In an interview with CNN from earlier this year, Caba said, “When I took Cadence out of the container at (the airport), I was just so delighted. The fact that she still remembered me made my excitement level much higher. It reminded me in a way of returning from a mission and seeing her waiting for me when I got back. It transported me straight back to that state of mind.”

This sensation that Caba described is a perfect example of what Nowzad Dogs is all about. According to Farthing, “on every single street corner in Kabul, you will find stray dogs.” “It would complete the cycle if they could bring the animal back to its original owners… They have second thoughts about just giving up on the animal.”

Mr. Farthing, whose actual name is Paul and who hails from Plymouth, is a former commando in the Royal Marines and went on to start the Nowzad Dogs charity in Kabul. He is 52 years old. During the course of Operation Herrick 5 in 2006, he was sent to Afghanistan as a member of K Company, 42nd Commando Royal Marines.

There, he came upon a fighting dog who provided the impetus for his charity. He gave the dog the name Nowzad, after the town where he was residing. Nowzad’s mission is to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats in Kabul via the use of the trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) technique. This will be accomplished without inflicting any unnecessary suffering on the city’s canine or feline population.

More than 1,700 animals have been treated and rehomed thanks to the efforts of Nowzad, the majority of which have been placed with troops who bonded with the animals while serving on the front lines. Over the course of its existence, the organization has also provided training to more than 500 veterinary students in Kabul.

Mr. Farthing and his wife, Kaisa Markhus, had been making frequent trips between their home in Exeter and Afghanistan; nevertheless, they were unable to leave the central Asian nation as the epidemic began to spread in the beginning of last year.

Mr. Farthing got involved in a high-profile dispute with the Defense Secretary when he claimed that Mr. Wallace prevented him from flying his animals and personnel back to the UK. On Wednesday, Mr. Wallace declared, via a series of tweets, that if Mr. Farthing arrived at the Kabul airport with his staff and animals, authorities would allow them to depart on the jet.

Mr. Farthing said that he had spent the last ten hours stranded outside of Hamid Karzai International Airport in the capital city of Afghanistan. His statement was made on Thursday morning. According to the Minister of the Armed Forces, James Heappey, the reason for the delay is the large number of desperate individuals who are waiting to evacuate, and the government would not give priority to Mr. Farthing because of his high profile.

In an interview with Sky News, he said, “I don’t believe we can shove other needy Afghans aside.” Mr. Farthing sent the following tweet to the spokesman for the Taliban, Suhail Shaheen: “Dear Sir; my crew and my animals are stopped at airport circle.” There is a flight that is waiting for us. Could you kindly ensure that our convoy is allowed to enter the airport in a secure manner?

It was disclosed to him on Friday morning that he, his crew, and the animals had been denied entry into the airport owing to a change in the regulations regarding documentation. In 2006, while serving with the Royal Marines in 42 Commando in Afghanistan, Farthing and his soldiers intervened in a brawl between two dogs that were taking place in the town of Nawzad. The brawl was between two pit bulls.

After this, one of the dogs decided to accompany Farthing, and as a result, they ended up spending the next six months together. During this time, Farthing gave the dog the name Nowzad, after the nearby town. Following the completion of his tour of duty, Farthing made it his mission to get the dog back to the United Kingdom. This served as the impetus for him to establish the charitable organization known as Nowzad Dogs, whose mission is to bring together returning soldiers and the dogs and cats who had been their companions during their time away from home. Additionally, the firm works to improve the welfare of animals in Afghanistan.

In addition to reconnecting former military people with the dogs and cats they knew in Afghanistan, Farthing via Nowzad has rescued animals who, after they are transported to the United Kingdom, will be made available for adoption by members of the general public. One of them was a dog by the name of Wylie, and Sarah Singleton took him in as her own.

The dog was awarded the title of dog of the year in the non-pedigree competition known as Scrufts 2014, which was organized and supervised by The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom. Years later, Farthing wrote a book on Wylie, and in 2014, it was released. The title of the book is Wylie: The Brave Street Dog Who Never Gave Up.  At the Daily Mirror and RSPCA Animal Hero Awards in 2013, Farthing was put up for consideration for the Lifetime Achievement award.
