Phil Driscoll was born in Seattle, Washington, but his family relocated to Spokane when he was a little kid. There, his father served as the pastor of a modest church, while his mother led the congregation in worship by playing songs on the piano and organ. In order to provide accompaniment for his father’s sermon, Phil played a miniature plastic trumpet. The family relocated to Dallas, Texas, when he was five years old. There, his parents continued their work in the church. Phil received a steel guitar for his sixth birthday, and he went on to win a number of talent competitions when he was still a youngster.

After that, the family relocated to Lancaster, Texas, where Phil’s father eventually accepted a position as the head of maintenance for the Lancaster school system. Phil started learning to play the trumpet while he was in the sixth grade, and by the time he was in the eighth grade, he was performing with the Lancaster High School band. In 1959, the family made the move to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Phil’s father picked up where he left off in the ministry. In the Tulsa Youth Symphony, Phil quickly rose through the ranks to become the main trumpet and featured performer.

During his senior year of high school, he participated in the World Music Festival in Amsterdam, where the trumpet section he was a part of was awarded first place overall. After finishing high school, he became the main trumpet player for the gospel band The Spurrlows and toured the country. After that, Driscoll received a music scholarship to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he was responsible for establishing the school’s very first jazz band.

While he was still a sophomore at Baylor University, Word Records made him an offer for a recording deal. In 1969, he recorded his debut album, titled A Touch of Trumpet, with the Stockholm Symphony Orchestra performing with him. In addition, he triumphed in the musical competition that was part of the All American College Program on CBS, besting even The Carpenters, and he was hired on a USO show that toured Asia. Driscoll also shared the stage with Billy Graham and preached beside him in Europe. Blowin’ a New Mind was his first album after signing with A&R Records, which he did so that he could release his secular songs. In the 1970s, Driscoll appeared as a guest performer on national television programmes such as those hosted by Ed Sullivan, Merv Griffin, Steve Allen, and Della Reese, as well as Arthur Godfrey.

In 1972, CBS Records bought Driscoll’s song collection and hired him to write music for a variety of bands, including Blood Sweat & Tears (for whom he wrote “Rock & Roll Queen” and other songs), for whom he composed “Rock & Roll Queen,” and other bands. In addition, he started playing, travelling, and composing songs with the rock artist Joe Cocker for over five years. He is credited as the songwriter for three of Joe Cocker’s songs, including “Southern Lady,” “Wasted Years,” and “Boogie Baby.” In addition, Driscoll has written songs for performers such as Steven Stills, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, and 38 Special; he has also worked with these musicians; he has also played with groups such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1974, he made the move to Jacksonville, Florida, and during his time there he founded two nightclubs: Driscoll’s Disco Nite Club and Driscoll’s Nice Place. He lived in Jacksonville for around 4.5 years.

In 1980, Driscoll and his family made the move to Cleveland, which is located in the state of Tennessee. He started recording in the inspirational genre with the album Ten Years After (1981), and he produced soulful records whose sound appealed to both black and white listeners. He began recording in the inspirational genre. Mighty Horn Ministries is his modern Christian music company, which he also discussed on television after it was founded by him. In the 1980s, Driscoll was also a musician and singer, and he performed at a number of ministry conferences hosted by Kenneth Copeland.

After releasing many more albums, Driscoll was finally recognised with his first GMA Dove Award in 1984 for Instrumentalist of the Year. At the same time, his album I Exalt Thee (1983) was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Gospel Performance – Male. It was in 1985 that he and the vocalist Debby Boone received a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for their collaboration on the song “Keep the Flame Burning,” which was included on Boone’s album Surrender. 1985 saw him acquire a recording contract with Benson Records, and the following year, Billboard magazine placed him at number nine on its list of the top 10 inspirational artists.
