Philadelphia Union Biography and Career:
The Philadelphia Union is a professional soccer team headquartered in the Philadelphia metropolitan region in the United States. The Union is a part of Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Eastern Conference. The club was founded on February 28, 2008, and started playing as an expansion team in 2010. Subaru Park, a soccer-specific stadium situated on the banks of the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania, is the club’s home stadium.
Despite being one of the country’s ten biggest metropolitan regions and a top-five media market, the Philadelphia area was not represented in Major League Soccer when it began in 1996. The first attempt to introduce soccer to the Delaware Valley occurred in 2001 when a group of investors sought to establish a Major League Soccer team in Trenton, New Jersey.
The cornerstone of their efforts was a $31 million soccer-specific stadium to be erected across the street from the CURE Insurance Arena and with connectivity to the NJ Transit River Line, which is now under construction. If the Trenton MLS franchise was formed, it would be known as “Union FC.” The MetroStars, on the other hand, had the power to refuse a franchise in Trenton because it would violate their 75-mile competition-free zone.
Five years later, plans were in place to build a 20,000-seat stadium on the Rowan University campus in Glassboro, New Jersey. The stadium would be home to both an MLS expansion team and Rowan’s football team. New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine ultimately vetoed a $100 million state bond to build the stadium and other renovations on the Rowan campus. Shortly after the Rowan idea fell through, Keystone Sports & Entertainment explored developing a soccer-specific stadium under the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester.
The Sons of Ben fan club was founded in 2007 to generate interest in a Major League Soccer franchise in Philadelphia. They are credited with showing to the MLS that they have a well-established fan base in the area.
On February 28, 2008, Major League Soccer welcomed Philadelphia as its sixteenth franchise. The club was completed as part of a $47 million package authorized by Delaware County officials and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, which included the cost of Subaru Park and a large urban revitalization project.
In the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, the Union selected three players, including fifth-round selection Zac MacMath. The Union gained jersey sponsor Bimbo Bakeries USA on January 11, 2011. Philadelphia added two new players on January 20: Colombians Faryd Mondragón (GK) and Carlos Valdés (D).
Mondragón just returned after a season with 1. FC Köln in the German Bundesliga, and he has at least 50 Colombian national team appearances. Valdés joined Philadelphia from Independiente Santa Fe in Colombia’s First Division, where he was captain. During the summer transfer window, the Union also signed US International Freddy Adu.
On June 13, 2012, John Hackworth was named temporary coach of the Unions, and he was named permanent coach on August 30, 2012. The Union concluded its third season eighth in the Eastern Conference and fifteenth overall in MLS, with a record of 10–18–6 (W-L-T), scoring 37 goals and allowed 45. Antoine Hoppenot, a third-round pick in the 2012 Supplemental Draft, scored four goals in 817 minutes of action.
Subaru Park, formerly known as PPL Park, hosted the 2012 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, in which the MLS All-Stars beat Chelsea F.C. 3–2. The Union also advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, beating the Rochester Rhinos 3–0 in the third round and defeating D.C. United 2–1 after extra time on the road in the fourth round. In the quarterfinals, they beat the Harrisburg City Islanders, their biggest affiliate at the time, 5–2.
The Union traded allocation money to get the first overall selection, which they used to choose Jamaican international goalkeeper Andre Blake. They then traded down many times before deciding on Coastal Carolina University midfielder Pedro Ribeiro. Maurice Edu, French midfielder Vincent Nogueira, Argentine midfielder Cristian Maidana, and former MLS Rookie of the Year defender Austin Berry were among the latest preseason additions.
Despite these acquisitions, the Union remained mediocre, winning just two of their first 14 games and establishing a 2–7–5 record (W-L-T). The Union transferred striker Jack McInerney to the Montreal Impact on April 20, 2014, in exchange for winger Andrew Wenger, a Lancaster, Pennsylvania native. Hackworth’s Union coaching career came to an end on June 10, 2014.
The Union transferred longstanding defender Sheanon Williams to the Houston Dynamo for allocation money during the 2015 summer transfer window, which they used to acquire Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta on July 29, 2015. The club had a strong run in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the final for the second time in a row. On September 30, 2015, Subaru Park hosted a match versus Sporting Kansas City.
In 2016, the Union acquired D.C. United’s Chris Pontius, Surinamese player Roland Alberg, and Brazilian right midfielder Ilsinho. In the summer transfer window, they would also sign US international Alejandro Bedoya. The Union would also sign Josh Yaro, Keegan Rosenberry, and Fabian Herbers from the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Goalkeeper Andre Blake had a successful season in 2016, winning the 2016 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award. Toronto FC defeated the Union 3–1 in the Knockout Round of the 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs.
The Union was unable to capitalize on their 2016 success, ending the season with the same record but missing the playoffs. Despite missing the playoffs, Curtin was confirmed as the team’s head coach for the 2018 season.

Prior to the 2019 season, Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner stated that Curtin will be retained on a one-year agreement for the following season. By July of that season, the Union had risen to the first position in the Eastern Conference, having had the greatest start to a season in the club’s history. Curtin’s performance prompted the club to announce that he had signed a two-year contract extension to serve as head coach until the 2021 season.
The Union’s most successful season to date came in 2020. Despite being hampered by the COVID-19 epidemic, the Union advanced to the MLS is Back Tournament semi-finals and went on to win their first trophy, finishing first in the league standings and claiming the 2020 Supporters’ Shield.
Curtin received his first Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year Award as a result of the team’s success this season. Winning the Supporter’s Shield earned the Union their first appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League, where they won their first international win against Deportivo Saprissa, marking Curtin’s 100th win as the club’s head coach.
