Phillips Idow Biography and Career:
Phillips Olaosebikan Idowu, MBE born 30 December 1978 is a British triple jump specialist. He has previously competed in the World Outdoor and Indoor Championships, the European Outdoor and Indoor Championships, and the Commonwomen’s Outdoor and Indoor Championships. Idowu grew up in Hackney and was a talented athlete in both basketball and American football at school, but he was most successful as a junior.
He rose to prominence in 1997 as a triple threat. Idowu won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March 2006. However, he was unable to maintain this form and finished fifth at the European Championships later that year.
In the absence of world champion Christian Olsson, Idowu defeated compatriot Nathan Douglas to win gold at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2007. He set a championship record with a jump of 17.56 metres, beating Olsson’s world-leading jump by 12 centimetres. [9] With a distance of 17.35 m, Idowu went on to win the IAAF Golden League Bislett Games in June 2007. By July 2007, he had risen to third place in the world triple jump rankings, a new career-high.
Idowu won his first world title on March 9, 2008, when he won gold at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain.
