Polly Samson Biography and Career:

Polly Samson was born in the year 1962 in London. Her father, Lance Samson, arrived in London in 1938 after leaving Hamburg on the Kindertransport. Esther Cheo Ying’s mother wrote a biography called Black Country to Red China, which details her life from Shanghai through Dr. Barnardo’s to China, where she served as a Major in Mao’s Army.

The family relocated to Cornwall and, subsequently, Devon in the 1970s. Polly, an only child, spent her early years creating tales and poetry that she wrote and illustrated herself. After numerous failed tries, one student finally earned a Blue Peter badge for writing about a solitary badger. That experience was the pinnacle of her youth. Despite a few bright spots, she was finally forced to leave the sixth form at Newton Abbot Grammar School, and after dropping out, she worked as a telex operator for a clay firm for a year.

With David’s four children from a previous marriage, they now have eight children: Joe, 15; Gabriel, 13; and Romany, 8. “But again, I always did appreciate The Sound of Music,” she admits. It is impossible not to see this as a continuation of a chain reaction that began with her lonely childhood and has continued down the generations, much like the short tales themselves. The Staines resident Felicia Double-Barrelled is incorrect. None of the tales concern Mrs. David Gilmour. They are deeper and more nuanced than that; an internal reverberation of creative expression, human experience, and the pain of loss.

When she turned eighteen, she followed her grandmother’s advice and relocated to London, where she found work in publishing. She found success in the publishing industry of the 1980s and was selected to Jonathan Cape’s board when she was only 24 years old.

She began dating author Heathcote Williams in 1988, and the couple eventually settled in Cornwall with their son, Charlie. She first worked as a freelance writer for publications including the Observer, Guardian, and Sunday Times, and then added weekly book reviews for the Daily Mail to her repertoire. She contributed to the Sunday Times weekly column for almost two years.

Her short tales have been extensively anthologized and aired on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3, and BBC Radio Scotland, as well as appearing in the Observer, You Magazine, the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Express Magazine, and the Guardian Weekend magazine.

Lying in Bed, Polly Samson’s first story collection was released by Virago in April 1999 and was named a “Book of the Year” by critics Susan Hill and Cressida Connolly. In April of 2000, Virago released her first book, Out of the Picture, which was subsequently nominated for the Writers’ Club’s first novel prize. The second collection of short stories by Polly Samson, Perfect Lives, was released by Virago in October 2010 and was a Sunday Times Fiction Pick of the Year and was nominated for the Edge Hill Award and featured on BBC Radio 4.

The short story “Ivan Knows” was nominated for a VS Pritchett Prize. When Daphne du Maurier’s The Doll and Other Tales was published in 2011, Polly was commissioned to write the introduction. In 2015, Bloomsbury released Polly Samson’s second book, The Kindness, to critical acclaim. Several literary awards, notably the Costa Novel of the Year Award and the Costa Book of the Year, have her on their judging panels.

She collaborated with David Gilmour on The Division Bell, Pink Floyd’s 1993 album, penning seven songs’ lyrics. On both sides of the Atlantic, the album debuted at the top spot. In 1994, when Polly Samson and David Gilmour tied the knot, she became the stepmother to Alice, Clare, Sara, and Matthew. Joe and Gabriel, their boys, were born in 1995 and 1997, respectively; Romany, their daughter, was born in 2002.

She worked with David Gilmour again in 2006, writing songs and providing vocals for the album On An Island, which debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and across Europe and cracked the top 10 in the United States. She played piano on one tune and performed harmony vocals on another; her 2008 performance on the Jools Holland Show was nearly as exciting as earning her Blue Peter certificate, she recalls. In 2015, Polly Samson contributed seven songs’ worth of lyrics to David Gilmour’s platinum-selling album Rattle That Locks.

The 2014 number one album, Pink Floyd’s The Endless River, included the hit single “Louder Than Words,” whose lyrics were written by Polly Samson. Bloomsbury has released the hardcover edition of her newest book, A Theatre for Dreams.

Seemingly, the effects have rippled through to the following generation. Samson was “such a depressed youngster” who started skipping classes at 14. Yet there is a feeling of loss and dislocation throughout her works, most plainly when one of her Jewish characters travels to Hamburg to track down her missing relatives, a city “where second-hand memories were swirling through the streets like rubbish,” just as they had done for Samson’s family.

Meanwhile, the world-renowned concert pianist Leszek has chosen to disregard his daughter with another woman. Heathcote Williams, the poet, cannot be overlooked as the other “Leszek” in Samson’s life. They dated and eventually produced Charlie, her firstborn child. During his breakdown, Williams and his wife stayed in a house on the sprawling Cornish estate of Williams’ friend, Peregrine Saint Germans.

“Even though he would have many others before, this one caught me off guard for some reason. It was nothing new for him to be unable to handle daily events. In a way, it was heartbreaking. We were together nonstop, happy, and in love one day, and then he was gone the next. I went to the main home and met with Peregrine, who warned me to leave the man alone since he was experiencing a nervous breakdown. One must realize that he cannot always assume the roles of Papa Bear, Mommy Bear, and Baby Bear. Honestly, it was horrible.”

She returned to London, where she had previously lived, and freelanced to provide for herself and her newborn. She eventually met David Gilmour via common acquaintances, and the two have been together ever since. Gilmour took in Charlie when he was barely two years old; now, Charlie is over 21 years old, and Gilmour is just now getting to know Heathcote Williams.
