Portland Trail Blazers Biography and Career:
The Portland Trail Blazers, sometimes known as the Blazers, are a professional basketball club located in Portland, Oregon, United States. They are a member of the National Basketball Association’s Western Conference and compete in the Northwest Division (NBA).
In 1970, the Trail Blazers became the first expansion franchise in the league’s history. There is a reference to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which came to an end not far from where present-day Portland is located. The Blazers, as they are known to their fans and the media, finished last in their division in each of their first four seasons and fifth out of six seasons in their first six years in the league.
That period saw a bright spot in the shape of forward-center Sidney Wicks, a member of the organization since 1971 who had been named to the All-Star team in each of his first four seasons.
In 1976–77, the Portland Trail Blazers had a stunning comeback, beginning with a regular-season record of 49–33. The comeback has begun with this performance. Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas, together with guard Lionel Hollins, guided the Blazers to the NBA finals in spite of their lack of playoff experience.
They defeated the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers. The Blazers were led by first-year head coach Jack Ramsay to the finals. Their opponents were the Philadelphia 76ers, who took the first two games of the series but were defeated by the Portland Trail Blazers in the remaining four games, allowing them to earn their first NBA championship.
The Trail Blazers qualified for the postseason in each of the following four seasons, however, they were eliminated in the first round of their respective postseason series on each occasion. Following an absence from the postseason in 1981–82, the Blazers returned to the postseason in 1982–83, marking the beginning of a streak of 21 consecutive postseason appearances for the club.
The Trail Blazers selected guard Clyde Drexler in the first round of the 1983 NBA Draft. Drexler would go on to play 12 seasons with the club and finish his career as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. Although the Blazers extended their playoff run under Drexler’s leadership, they only moved beyond the first round of the playoffs once during Drexler’s first six seasons in Portland.
Sam Bowie was selected second overall in the 1984 NBA draught by the Portland Blazers, while Michael Jordan was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the following selection. First-time NBA champions the Trail Blazers won their first three playoff series in 1989–90 led by point guard Terry Porter, forward Jerome Kersey, and center Clyde Drexler.
In the NBA Finals, the squad was beaten by the Detroit Pistons in five games, and the team was eliminated from the tournament. The Blazers were ousted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals the next season, despite compiling a franchise-best 63–19 record. In 1991–92, Portland went to the NBA finals for the second time but was defeated by the Chicago Bulls in a six-game series in the finals.
Later, the Blazers resumed their previous pattern of postseason failure, falling in the first round for six consecutive seasons from 1992–93 through 1997–98, a trend that began in the previous season. It was the Portland Trail Blazers that ended their run in 1998–99 as they progressed to the Western Conference finals only to be defeated by the San Antonio Spurs.
The Trail Blazers advanced to the conference finals the following season, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in a seven-game series that was notable for the Trail Blazers blowing a 15-point fourth-quarter lead in the deciding game, which was at the time the largest lead ever surrendered in the final period of a playoff series.
The term “Jail Blazers” was given to the club in the early 2000s because of the significant number of Portland players who were involved in legal issues at the time. At about the same time, the Blazers’ eight-year record of making the playoffs came to an end, and the team started a period of rebuilding that culminated in a last-place divisional finish in 2005–06.
In part due to the efforts of All-Star guard Brandon Roy, the Trail Blazers made it back to the playoffs for three straight seasons starting in 2008–09. However, injuries caused Roy to retire early from the game in 2011, and the Blazers were eliminated from contention in 2011–12.

The squad rapidly recovered and improved upon its previous season’s performance, winning 21 games and advancing to the playoffs in 2013–14. However, the club rallied behind star guard Damian Lillard and went on to extend its postseason run to three years.
The Blazers, on the other hand, failed to live up to preseason expectations in 2016–17, finishing as the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoffs and being swept in the first round of the postseason. 2017–18 saw the Blazers win a division championship but were swept in the first round of the playoffs, continuing their streaky performance from the previous season.
Despite the disappointment of the previous season, Portland rallied to reach the Western Conference finals for the first time in almost two decades, thanks to clutch postseason performances by Lillard and fellow star guard CJ McCollum.
