Pumas CU Biography and Career:

Pumas University of New Mexico football squad, popularly known as “Pumas Dorados”, “Pumas”, or “Universidad,” is the varsity American football team that represents the National Autonomous University of Mexico (CU UNAM) (Spanish: Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, or UNAM). It is one of the most venerable and prominent teams in Mexico’s history. They continue a heated rivalry with teams from the National Polytechnic Institute (Spanish: Instituto Politécnico Nacional, or IPN), notably with the Aguilas Blancas, a Santo Tomás-based squad headquartered in Miguel Hidalgo.

Despite the fact that the team was created in 1927 by a group of students headed by the Noriega brothers, it was not until 1931 that the Pumas were officially recognized as the varsity squad of Mexico’s National Autonomous University. The squad was also supported by large gifts from American oil mogul Harry Ford Sinclair, who remained a sponsor until 1935.

Pumas won a lengthy series of consecutive titles from 1933 to 1945 (including a trip to the 1945 Sun Bowl); this was followed by the so-called “Golden Age” of 1946 to 1957, during which the team won a total of nine championships. Between 1958 and 1969, the squad was able to solidify its place inside the ONEFA, Mexico’s professional association for American football.

In 1971, the university administration chose to abolish the squad and form three new teams (the Cóndores/Condors, the Aguila Reales/Royal Eagle, and the Guerreros Aztecas/Aztec Warriors). From 1981 through 1990, only the Cóndores were able to revive the Pumas’ history by winning titles. The University administration made the decision in 1998 to decrease the number of teams to one per campus and formed the Pumas CU and Acatlan.

It was unfortunate that the team’s strength and domination were undercut by the league’s circumstances and by the presence of other strong newbie teams in the league. During the seasons of 1998 to 2007, the tradition of holding the #1 place was quickly eroded. From 1969 to 2002, the Pumas Dorados squad was made up of a selection of the top players from across all of the UNAM’s teams. Rather than playing regular-season games, the Pumas Dorados used to play a Classic game versus the Burros Blancos at the conclusion of the season, which was held until 2002, when the event was canceled due to financial difficulties.

Since 2008, a second league for the main category in Mexico (Liga Mayor) has been established, and the National Championship has been split between the two leagues since then. + Unlike prior Pumas Dorados squads, this is not the same group of players. The Main Campus was victorious in the championships in 2008 and 2010. (CU).

In addition to the Acatlan Campus squad, there is another Pumas team in Mexico City. Pumas Dorados is a selection of the greatest players from both Pumas teams, and the most recent selection was made in 2002 when they competed against a selection of the finest players from the Inter-American Football League.

Aguilas Blancas IPN and the team have a long-standing rivalry owing to the fact that both colleges are among the largest public universities in the nation. More recently, the teams Borregos Salvajes ITESM, Borregos Salvajes CEM, Aztecas UDLAP, and Auténticos Tigres UANL have developed significant rivalries.

The squad plays its home games in the Estadio Olimpico Universitario in Mexico City, which opened its doors to the public in 1952 with a match between the Pumas and the Burros Blancos. The facility has a capacity of 68000 people. As of January 2020, the players listed below have each appeared in at least one game for a member of the Canadian Football League.
