Rassie Erasmus Biography and Career:

Johan “Rassie” Erasmus is a South African rugby union coach and former player who was born on 5 November 1972. He served as the first-ever SARU Director of Rugby after being hired there around the end of 2017, and he also served as the head coach of the South African national side from 2018 until the conclusion of their World Cup campaign in 2019.

He coached South Africa to victory in the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and as a result, he was named World Rugby Coach of the Year for the same year. Erasmus participated in matches for the Stormers, Cats, Free State, and Golden Lions.

Between 1997 and 2001, he earned 36 South African national team appearances, including action in the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Following his 2021 ban from all rugby-related activities, a series of popular Tiktok videos helped him win the position of South Africa’s ambassador for the “It’s Fokkol, is Festive” movement.

He has coached the Free State Cheetahs, Western Province, and served as an advisor to the South African national team at various times. Additionally, he was the former General Manager of High Performance Teams for the South African Rugby Union and the former Director of Rugby of Irish provincial team Munster.

With the Free State during the 1994 Currie Cup, Erasmus began his professional rugby career. Erasmus continued to grow as a key loose forward for his province by the time rugby union became professionally organized in 1995, and he was chosen for the Free State’s 1997 Super 12 debut.

Prior to the 1997 British Lions visit to South Africa, he had been called up for national duty with the Springboks by July 1997. Prior to the third test, which the Lions had already won, Erasmus made his test debut in Johannesburg on July 5.

The home team prevailed 35-16. On August 23, that same year, Erasmus played Australia in his second Springboks game, starting at flank, scoring a try in South Africa’s 61-22 victory in Pretoria. Between 1997 and late 1998, the Springboks had a 17-game winning streak during which Erasmus played in 15 of those games.

After making a name for himself as South Africa’s starting flanker, Erasmus joined the Cats prior to the 1998 Super 12 season, where he played until 2001. While he served as captain from 1999 to 2000, the Cats advanced to the 2000 Super 12 season semifinals but fell to the Brumbies 28-5.

He was controversially relieved of his leadership by Laurie Mains during the 2001 season. Despite once again reaching the semifinals that year, both Erasmus and Mains left the team at the end of the campaign. According to rumors, one of the reasons for their separation was their romance.

For one test against Australia in the 1999 Tri Nations Series, Erasmus was appointed captain. Later, he was included in the 30-person roster for the 1999 Rugby World Cup. By “attacking, insulting and/or demeaning the game and match officials and not respecting the authority of match officials,” Erasmus was found guilty by a misconduct committee. After the decision, Erasmus declared that he will file an appeal.

After Allister Coetzee was fired in February 2018, Erasmus was appointed director of rugby at SA Rugby and head coach of the national team on March 1. In Washington, D.C. against Wales in his debut game as coach, Erasmus awarded thirteen players their first test call-ups.

Wales won the test 22-20. A week later, during their three-test series against England, he achieved his first victory, winning 42-39. The second test, which the Springboks won 23-12 to win, sealed the series triumph for them. South Africa lost the third test 25-10, preventing them from completing the complete sweep.

Erasmus guided the Springboks to second place in the Rugby Championship, their best finish since 2014. South Africa won three games in the 2018 Championship, including a stunning 36-34 victory over New Zealand in Wellington, the team’s first triumph there since 2009.

Erasmus confirmed, following the 2019 World Cup victory, that he would have submitted his resignation had the Springboks lost that game: After taking over as the head coach of his former club, the Free State Cheetahs, for the 2004 Vodacom Cup, Erasmus’ coaching career officially began.

He took his team to the Cup Semi-Finals during his first coaching term, but they were defeated by the Blue Bulls 23-20. He advanced to the Currie Cup in 2005, bringing the Free State to victory that year. The Cheetahs won the Cup for the first time since 1976.

The next year, Erasmus guided the Cheetahs into their inaugural Super 14 season, where they placed tenth with five victories out of thirteen games. Later same year, the Free State Cheetahs successfully defended their Currie Cup crown, but they were forced to share the trophy with the Blue Bulls because the final score of 28-28 after extra time left little room for any other factors to separate the two teams.

Erasmus departed the Cheetahs organization after the 2007 Super 14 season after being named technical consultant to the Springboks in preparation for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. His tenure was, however, cut short when he was hired by the Western Province organization as director of rugby with effect from the start of their 2007 Currie Cup season.

He was also appointed as the Stormers’ head coach for the 2008 Super 14 season, when he helped the team advance to the semi-finals by a razor-thin margin after improving it from tenth position in 2007 to fifth in 2008. By the middle of 2009, Western Province and the Stormers had reorganized their organizational structure.

And with Allister Coetzee taking over as head coach of the province’s Super Rugby team and Erasmus promoted to Senior Professional Coach for the region. The region experienced great success in 2010 with this new system, with the Stormers and Western Province both making it to the finals but losing to finish second in their respective championships.

While the Stormers, who won their conference and advanced to the semifinals for a second straight year in 2011, emerged as the top South African team.
